Bush Order Could Move War Online Sources: Methods To Attack Networks To Be Examined
POSTED: 9:31 a.m. EST February 7, 2003
WASHINGTON -- War could be moving into cyberspace.
President George W. Bush has reportedly signed a secret order to determine when and how the United States could launch attacks against enemy computer networks.
That's according to administration sources, who told The Washington Post this is the first time the president has ordered such guidance to be drafted. They said the United States has never conducted a large-scale cyber-attack.
But the Pentagon has been developing cyber-weapons. They could allow for less-bloody attacks on enemy targets, without risking lives.
The Post said military planners envision soldiers using computers as weapons to dismantle foreign radars, electricity and phone service.

..the United States has never conducted a large-scale cyber-attack. I guess the US has conducted small-scale attacks.
Any idea who the United States attacked?

No, but "invasive tools" have been under development for a long time.

But the Pentagon has been developing cyber-weapons. Heck, just make the enemy country a beta user of any Microsoft product. That should suffice...

I don't fund anything wrong with the concept. What bothers me is the statements about it being a secret order and that and administration official leaked it. IMHO, all these leakers need to be summarily shot...

I wonder if this allows for privateering.
Could I, for example, hack an Iraqi account and transfer a couple of million dollars of theirs into my account without being prosecuted by our government?

They have computers in Iraq? I bet Saddam is spending a lot of time on some of those weird chat channels...(along with Scott Ritter).
As far as private endeavors might as well try and find out :)

I sincerely hope their electronic skills are better than those that have been shown so far at the FBI and the CIA (which is said to have a woefully out-of-date in house system). Otherwise, who knows what they'll succeed in bringing down?
I wouldn't mind too much if they fried the AOL servers.
