Rummy is a big boy, so he ought to be able to take the criticism for his remarks.

This should read:

Klaus Naumann, former chaiman of NATO's military committee, said however justified German criticism might be of President George W. Bush's stance on a war with Iraq, [Fischer's:Schröder's:etc..] comments were no way to treat a loyal ally. "The USA is and remains a reliable alliance partner," he told ZDF television. "That's not the way to treat partners.

Maybe I am not mainstream, but I like the guy very much for his humor among other things. Besides that, he did not exactly compare Germany to Cuba and Lybia, he just said these were the three countries not wanting to deal in any way with the Iraki problem. The Germans must have a load of guilt to react like they do. Keep going Mr. Rumsfeld, nice job.

..on a par with Libya and Cuba.

Who cares indeed!
The statement is actually an insult to Cuba.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld faces a hostile reception on Friday from German politicians and peace activists

I just can't picture SecDef Rummy losing any sleep over what the Germocrats think.

As he said later he was simply pointing out that the current German leadership ran for office on a platform of ignoring Iraq.

As far as I'm concerned, the Germans are no different than the Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys. They're mad because Rummy called them for what they are. Who the H*ll cares......

Karsten Voigt, the German government's top adviser on U.S. relations, said Rumsfeld was forgetting that Germany was deeply engaged in peacekeeping missions in the Balkans and Afghanistan.

As I remember it two years ago, someone shot at the germans' 400 man peace keeping force and they pulled 181-men out without notification, and only told the UN about the rest pulling out when the convoy wheels were rolling.

So it's news to me that Germany stayed at all; Is it not funny, the German's run like that but only after close association with the French:)

He said the number of U.S. troops in Germany could be reduced under a study of U.S. basing needs that has been underway for two years, but gave no hint decisions were close.

And since there's no Soviet Union or East Germany anymore, why can't ALL those troops be brought home NOW?

If I was Rumsfeld I would threaten the closure of our bases over there and leave the checkbook home. I wonder what affect that will have on their economy?

Rumsfeld's comments on Wednesday putting Germany in the same category as Libya and Cuba as states that would not be helpful in any international effort to overthrow Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein have infuriated many...

Truth hurts, huh?

OK, Germany, tell us just exactly how you are going to be more helpful than Libya and Cuba.

(Sound of crickets chirping.)

"Seethe"--I don't think the old Kraut from Old Europe can seethe. It must be a typo. Shouldn't this read, "Wheeze"?

These Germans forget real quick who it was that dumped billions into rebuilding their country after we whooped them in a war THEY started. They also forget who spent billions in time and money to free them from the yoke of communism and help reunite their homeland.

The Germans need more than the little chiding that Rummy gave them. They need a good boot in the butt!

Thanks for the thread, kattracks!
