CNN just announced that President Bush will speak at 4:30. That's all they said. Didn't sound like it was previously scheduled.

Every single item was apparent to ALL yesterday. U.N. stuff should be handled by Powell. Period. Bush needs to be above that process, because he needs to be the one who doesn't personally win or lose should our Security Council resolution fail. He needs to say enough is enough, now we rumble.

Then again, I've always seen the value of Powell to the team for JUST these types of circumstances. He has the rep among our clueless neighbors as a measured, non-partisan statesman. He has the U.N. account, Bush should not have been involved after his 9/12 speech. This just reinforces the doubts that the politically uninformed have about Bush's clear thinking and real agenda here.

I'll take the judgement of y'all, because I highly respect your instincts on these things. But ... I don't think this was a well conceived gambit given the huge profile success of the SOS yesterday.

Well, I imagine that President Bush was a little ticked after hearing the surrender-monkeys and The Swimmer yesterday and then Barbra Boxhead today trying to skewer Gen. Powell today. And he just announced to the world that it's time to stop playing games. Things are about to get very serious.

Arne, you are only looking at this from one perspective. There are many facets to the plan. Go back and read my list again. Not all of them were reasons, but I will bet 4 or 5 of them were.

And the President doesn't do anything without good reason. He has a long track record of that.

My take on this is that yesterday, Bush had Powell deliver the official last appeal to the UN to get onboard. Today he delivered his personal last appeal to the UN to get onboard. After all this, he cannnot be credibly accused of not being clear in his intentions nor of not giving adequate notice of what we are about to do. I think he did not set a deadline, because it would limit us and give Saddam an additional window of safety.

He also made it very clear today - another resolution is welcome, but will not alter the outcome of our decision one way or another. In other words - he's not waiting. The train is about to leave the station.

Powell WORKS for President Bush! Powell stood by as The President made his comments today. The final authority in this matter is 'The Commander-in-Chief.'

Many of us here have a judgement of General Powell that is somewhat less reverential and adulatory (word?) than our neighbors and the International mobs of wine swilling dreck. We know his role in the first Gulf Conflict, we know his propensity to capitulate and work his own program. But, our neighbors don't. They think he's the greatest statesman and most principled public figure on earth. His spotlight was crucial in crafting a confidence among the nervous nellies that this mission was vital, noble and just. His boring monotonic presentation yesterday was portrayed as the epitome of a charismatic, measured, serious missive. It was emotionless, but some people LIKE that because emotion and resolve scares them and makes the big bad world real.

So, Powell laid out the case. He should have appeared on 60 minutes 2, Larry King or some other blab show tonight to hammer home the seriousness and critical essence of our threat, and our options.

Bush flourished eight days ago in the SOTU speech. He comported himself brilliantly and humanely in his response to the Columbia tragedy.

Things were in place, except for a firm and unequivocal response to the reckless threats from Pyongyang.

Now, Bush the war-hungry cowboy is back on the main menu, and that's a misperception of image that the anti-American cockroaches are selling desperately to create FUD.
