IN ESTIMATING THE potential impact of Colin Powells U.N. presentation on persons bent on believing there is no justification for a military response to Iraqs behavior, remember the human capacity for the willful suspension of disbelief.
Remember this: People determined to believe that a vast conspiracy assassinated President Kennedy believe that the complete absence of evidence of the conspiracy proves the vastness and cleverness of the conspiracy.

France is, whether it is aware of it or not, putting a stake through the heart of the UN, and in the process reducing itself to a laughing stock.
There is nothing that the United States could ever do that could ever cut France quite so cleanly down to size.
It is time for a reconstituted United Nations wherein France has no veto, as is appropriate to its stature.

From the atricle:
There is the outline of a satisfactory outcome: Saddam removed, the U.N. reduced.
Amen, George Will, amen to that.

But if the U.N., having passed 1441, now refuses to authorize war, the U.N. will essentially cease to exist. Ah, now that would be a shame... < /sarcasm >
Good post!

We should auction the UN building and make it a giant Imax theater or something. :) They are beyond irrelevant.

Just make sure all the UN delegates pay up on their parking tickets first.

It is time for a reconstituted United Nations wherein France has no veto, as is appropriate to its stature. The UN was formed before my birth. Can someone tell me why France was ever granted veto authority in the first place? I'm guessing it had to be granted out of pity, but didn't most of France aid and abet the Nazis during WWII?
To: kattracks
With 100,000 troops and 5 carriers deployed, you can't just let them sit out there.
The UN is run by turd world morons in designer suits. It lost its relavance 35 years ago.
They won't do a damn thing! They hate Israel and the USA.

"But if the U.N., having passed 1441, now refuses to authorize war, the U.N. will essentially cease to exist. There is the outline of a satisfactory outcome: Saddam removed, the U.N. reduced." What a beautiful thought. Let's keep the faith.

It was already infinitesimal. If it reduces itself any further, I daresay it is in danger of disappearing completely.

I'd say it was mostly due to history, and the fact that France bore the brunt of the Allied losses on the Western Front in WWI.

Doesn't sound like a good reason to make France a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Is there a way to oust France from that status?
To: PeoplesRepublicOfWashington
I don't think so, but don't know enough about the inner workings of the UN to make any kind of a definitive statement. They do have SSBN's, though, so they're a military force to be reckoned with, strategically. This has interesting implications if they become an Islamic state in 40-50 years.

But if their missiles fly as well as their ships float, we'll be fine.
Mexico, however, is in deep doo-doo.

As I've said before regarding France's stated desire to lead an EU force of three aircraft carriers, they'll dominate the seas within carrier air range of their drydocks.
Nice tag line, BTW.
