City says no to a war with Iraq

BY GINNY HALLER

keysnews.com

KEY WEST - The city commission has said no to a first strike military action by the United States against Iraq. The moment after City Commissioner Carmen Turner introduced a resolution that asked for a multilateral diplomatic approach to Iraq, the audience in Old City Hall stood and cheered.

"I have a 23-year-old son," said Mayor Jimmy Weekley. "My greatest fear is to lose my son over a conflict that I believe to be about oil."

Speaker after speaker uttered words of peace and wishes for the city motto of One Human Family to be extended to the rest of the world.

"Sixty two cities have passed this resolution, and the entire state of Maine," said Stuart Petersen, a Key West High School student. "Let's make Key West the 63rd and extend our motto to the rest of the world."

But Douglas Jones said the resolution was circumventing his rights as a citizen of Key West for the city commission to say his voice will not be heard on a national level.

"Please don't make my opinion not matter," said Jones. "It is not the point tonight to give in to a loud majority to disenfranchise our community."

Commissioners Merili McCoy and Harry Bethel were the dissenting votes, McCoy reluctantly cast a no vote as she supported the concerns of the audience.

"I will write a letter to the President about this issue," said McCoy before she reluctantly cast a no vote. "But this is a curious resolution, that we take a stand for all of the people in the city. I feel as if I have been put in a position of being a war monger if I don't support this resolution."

Bethel said no one wants a war, that he respects what was said last night, but he must support the choices of the president and U.S. Congress.

In other business, the commissioners gave a unanimous vote of confidence to City Manager Julio Avael with a three year extension of his contract.

"When I first became a commissioner I wanted to duke it out with Julio Avael," said Commissioner Tom Oosterhoudt, who added that he is impressed with how Avael is able to see the big picture of all the issues in the city.

the City which was the setting for Hemmingway's To Have and Have Not is still a veeery conflicted and extreeeemly corrupt (democrat) city. The rich get richer and the poor keep them that way. The Feds could/should have a RICO field day down here

This paper is call the 'Bait Wrapper' by the locals so as not to offend the Fish [Wrapper]

Citizen's Voice

"There's two items in the news I want to comment on. One of them is the resolution that the city commission wants to send to the federal government about starting a war in Iraq. I don't believe that the city commission should be entering into that either way. They represent all the people of Key West; some people are for it and some people are against it, so I don't think the city commission should be entering into that kind of a fray. And the second comment I would like to make is about Julio Avael's five-year contract. I hope the commissioners are smart enough to know that we cannot afford another five years of Julio Avael. If they want to do a year at a time, that's fine. But a five-year contract is not a good way to go because this makes a person feel like they're more of a dictator than an employee of the city."

"It's not that the American public should stand by its soldiers and stand by its president. No, the president of the United States should stand by the American people, and the soldiers of the American people should fight and stand for Americans. ... I just can't say it enough, that the American president and the American military work for and should appreciate the opinion of the American people, not the other way around."

"About Commissioner Oosterhoudt's recent no-panhandling zone, what he has done is gotten the panhandlers out of his area, out of his neighborhood, and out of his view, and pushed them into the surrounding areas. My area. Thank you for nothing, Commissioner Oosterhoudt."

"Wolfpack? What an aggressive, immature title. Why not something like traffic safety squad? Shows again the Key West Police Department's power trip mentality. Red light runners and speeders go on all week long. Why only Friday and Saturday night? To get more MAD DUI awards? Don't want to give tickets. Give us a break."

"Has anyone else but me noticed how much construction is going on, houses are being built, now that the FBI is investigating Pritam Singh? Think about it."

"... That comment I made about houses being developed with Pritam Singh being under investigation, you probably [don't] understand what I meant, so I will explain it to you. The county was most likely holding on to all these permits for people who have been trying to get their houses built for years. And now that Pritam Singh is under investigation they want to cover their own asses, so they are finally letting people build their houses. And I also notice they are going up fast, so inspectors aren't hassling them and harassing them like crazy. Now do you understand?"

"In response to the comment on the madman in the White House. You could have had Hitler or Saddam as a leader. ... "

"Congratulations to members of the Key West High School band for the wonderful concert they put on last Thursday evening."

"Gary Condit is a skirt-chasing sex maniac. And he said as far as he was concerned, women were his to use, abuse and dispose of. And that sounds like our president we had a couple of years ago. What do you think about this, ladies that love Clinton?"

"Yes I wonder how I can sleep tonight, knowing that Beavis and Butthead are in the White House. This really scares me."

"Yes. I don't see anything strange about Scott Smith having a DUI conviction, considering there are Key West police officers who drink on duty. ... "

"Isn't it illegal to ride your motorcycle across the pedestrian bridge? Gee, the police department should ticket their own. I just saw a Key West police officer ride his motorcycle across the pedestrian bridge."

"I'm an RVer and I take exception the uninformed rantings of those who assume holding tanks are irresponsibly dumped in our shopping centers and at the beach parking lot. Where is the mess, if that were true? Perhaps you should wonder why the beaches are periodically closed because of a high e-coli count. Could that possibly be from the thousands of boats anchored off our shores, as e-coli stems from human waste?"

"To the person that is trying to say Jimmy Weekley doesn't hire the needy, he's never been in a Fausto's."

The "Anti - - Anti-war" Wave. What Should It Be? What Should It Look Like?

So I'm to assume this guy's son is in the military? Somehow I don't think he or his son have ever been within 500 miles of a military base.

I say turn over Key West to Cuba, and see what they think in a year.

If Cuba had any sense they would refuse to take them on the grounds it would lower the average IQ of Cuba by several points.

Forunately for these losers and others like them, their braver and much wiser fellow citizens will protect them whether they deserve that protection or not. As they wrap themselves in their holier than thou statements and behavior I can assure them that I will take my chances answering to God for pre-emptively protecting myself and my fellow Americans instead of waiting until the "smoking gun" is "smoking Chicago."

God knows my heart and He knows the heart of our enemies, again I will take my chances answering to Him.

Personally, I would urge all of the Democrat-controlled legislatures and city governments in the U.S. to come out against the war.

More and more folks are beginnning to trust our POTUS. That being the case, they are realizing that the people who say "It's just about oil" are fools. So, we need to let the fools take a clear stand. Folks need to know who to vote against next time around.

(A lot of Dems get into office without any of today's yellow-dog Democrats really knowing much if anything about them. A vote to forego war with Iraq would help us get to "know" them.)

Um, given your constituency, you are statistically far more likely to lose your son to AIDS.

Is the full text of the resolution available? I looked at the resolution/petition that a group is proposing for L.A., and it says we can only attack Iraq if they directly and militarily attack us first. Most people signing the L.A. resolution/petition probably didn't read it closely enough to understand what it was really saying.

The difference between Mayor Jimmy Weekly and myself: I would not send my son to war, I would go to war myself to protect the way of life enjoyed by my family and children. Why? Because unlike these morons I believe that if we do nothing, eventually they will destroy us.

Too True

and check out this Queen/Clown/ City Commissioner who writes a weekly piece on HIMSELF in the third person! He calls himself the "Colorful Commish"

Check out the poodle on his bald head ... Jim Trafficant would be envious

It was heartwarming to see people of every denomination come out and support congregation B'Nai Zion's "Community Cares" yard sale and party on Sunday. It proves what we can do when we all work together. Several thousand dollars were raised toward the $600,000 needed to rebuild.
The same Sunday afternoon, Evalena Worthington helped Commissioner Carmen Turner raise thousands for Big Brothers and Sisters with her annual "Battle of the Bars" contest at the Schooner Wharf Bar. Hundreds gathered as dozens of bar teams competed for the title. Lots of libations were consumed as the six hour marathon contest took place in the sweltering summer sun.
It was definitely a Carter family weekend in Key West with parents Bob and Jane Carter, joining daughter Angel and their two sons, Nick and Aaron. Friday night the commish and Nick went to Durty Harry's at Rick's, where Nick did a record two and a half hour set of head-banging hard rock for the packed house. Owner Mark Rossi was on hand to enjoy the miniature rock concert. What a night!

Saturday night the Colorful Commish helped coordinate Aaron Carter's memorabilia presentation at the Hard Rock Café. The place was packed with adoring fans and Aaron thrilled most of them with autographed pictures. Aaron once again made history by being the youngest rock performer to ever be asked by the Hard Rock to present one of his show outfits for display in its 31 years. What a go Aaron! Special thanks to Hard Rock's newest general manager, Keith Lyons, and host David Wylie for making this phenomenal event possible.

The Colorful Commish also enjoyed meeting everyone at the Key West Convalescent Center this past week. Once again the Hard Rock came though to "love all and serve all" as the staff treated some of our respected senior citizens to a wonderful birthday party at the center. The commish made many new friends out there.

Please keep those e-mails coming to the Colorful Commish at TomO@oosterbooster.com

"I have a 23-year-old son," said Mayor Jimmy Weekley"

I think this was dictated over the phone to the pressroom, and they got it wrong. Should be:

I have a 23-year-old son," said Mayor Jimmy, weakly.

you know they actually went to Congress after the Mariel Boat lift from Cuba and seceded from the USA, declaired war and surrendered.

The complaint was a customs stop inside the US on US HWY 1

each year the Conch Republic declairs war again and the US Coast Guard 'defeats' their navy with water cannons
