"I believe that we are God's noble experiment." Sen. Chuck (E-cheese) Schumer
C-Span 2 | Feb. 5, 2003

Posted on 02/05/2003 2:03:03 PM PST by Ragtime Cowgirl

Quotes from Chuck Schumer on the floor of the Senate during the past 10 minutes (C-span 2). Working up to a whopper of an excuse for rejecting Miguel Estrada as a judicial candidate.

"For those of us who revere the Constitution and believe in the rule of law...I believe that we are God's noble experiment. The Senate must hold up its end of the bargain. We have a duty to the judiciary, to the Constitution and, yes, to the American people."
"We have an obligation to be vigilant defenders of Constitutional obligation. We must live up to the standards of those who came before us."

God is saving the lightning for later, I guess. Chuckie's accusing us of making personal attacks.

"It's deeply and solemnly necessary to uphold the will of the founding fathers."

Oh, please! Chuckie should read the Constitution again. It would tell him that he is no longer a member of the majority. "Will of the people" and according to the Constitution.

"This goes to the very sacred obligation each of us has when we take that oath of office."

"It's deeply and solemnly necessary to uphold the will of the founding fathers." = "redefining the will of the founding fathers."

Funny thing is, I agree 100% with what he just said- unfortunately what he is SAYING is exactly the opposite of what he is DOING...

Yep. There seems to be an epidemic of hypocrisy going around.

If "experiment" implies that God could be surprised or proven wrong by how His "noble experiment" turns out, it's a poor choice of words, at best.

That would make about as much sense as what the Episcopal church minister said while Dubya was in attendance last Sunday morning. "God's heart is more heartbroken than our own," said the Rev. Luis Leon. Pardon me if I'm misinterpreting him but, it sounds to me like he's saying God was helpless to do anything to prevent the Columbia incident.

When did the Left get concerned about standards? The only standard C Schumer is looking for is zero gun ownership.

If he had taken time to make some observations he might realize God knows what he is doing.

actually, IMHO, the reason that Chuckie's waaaaaaay out front and over the top on this is that it's the beginning of his 2004 re-election campaign.....

Won't he need Hispanic votes in that election?

Sen. Pete Domenici was shaking (w/ anger?) and just dared the Dems. to filibuster - told Schumer that he was very familiar with the institution (rules) of the Senate. Bring it on!

We are God's experiment, but are not allowed to mention Him in school

Good point!

Sen. Orrin Hatch is on fire now! He is not going to let the minority party repeat the abuses of 2002. He even raised his voice. 'I am so doggone tired of hearing about this Professor Bender.' Orrin's nailing Bender now - Estrada's #1 critic.

'Mr. Bender is an extremist by even the most liberal standards." Bender's a porn defender. Go, Orrin!

On Paul Bender, see this source:

A recent exception to this generalization underscores the perils that arise when inexperienced political lawyers overrule the career lawyers and insist on an abrupt change in position in the middle of a case. Near the beginning of his service as President Clinton's first Solicitor General, Drew Days filed a confession of error in a brief on the merits in Knox v. United States, 510 U.S. 939 (1993), a child pornography conviction. Although the career lawyers in the Bush Administration had argued that the conviction should be upheld, Days-reportedly at the urging of his new Political Deputy Paul Bender-argued that the lower courts had applied an improperly broad interpretation of the statute. See Joan Biskupic, Politics Still Plays a Role in Solicitor General's Office, WASH. POST, Feb. 22, 1994, at A1. According to the new Solicitor General's position, free speech considerations required that the "lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area" of children be interpreted to mean exhibitions in which the genital areas are fully exposed. In the films produced by Knox, by contrast, young girls were shown cavorting in tight bathing suits, leotards, or underpants. See Brief for the United States, at 10-13, 20-23, Knox v. United States, 510 U.S. 939 (1993) (No. 92-1183). Upon receiving this confession or error, the Court vacated and remanded the conviction for reconsideration by the lower court.

Days' action was undoubtedly motivated by sincere concerns about free speech values. But it proved to be deeply embarrassing to the Clinton Administration. Republicans had a field day suggesting that the Administration favored coddling child pornographers, and secured a unanimous resolution in the Senate condemning the new interpretation. See Biskupic, supra note 26. When, on remand, the Third Circuit rejected the new interpretation and reaffirmed Knox's conviction, Attorney General Reno took the highly unusual step of publicly repudiating the Solicitor General's prior position, and signing the opposition to certiorari herself. See David G. Savage & Ronald J. Ostrow, U.S. Won't Fight Pornography Conviction, L.A. TIMES, Nov. 11, 1994, at A34. The Court then denied certiorari without comment. See Knox v. United States, 513 U.S. 1109 (1995).

Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?"

We revere the Constitution = we have a duty to the Constitution
We believe in the Rule of Law = We have a duty to the Judiciary
I believe we are God's noble experiment = We have a duty to the American people

"Did you guess which thing was not like the others? Did you guess which thing just doesn't belong?
If you guessed this one is not like the others,
Then you're absolutely...right!"

Yep, but...the Dem party in NY is in chaos..they outnumber the GOP by several million, let they've lost all the recent big major statewide races....and NYC, one of the more liberal cities in the country, keeps electing GOP mayors....actually, the black and the Hispanics are starting to bump heads over power and patronage, and both are trying to squeeze out the remaining Jewish pols....( hear that Chuckie)....there were some bitter primary races in the last two elections....the old line black pols..Rangel, Dinkens, et al...they're on the decline, and the new group of Dem political leaders are mainly Hispanic..and of course, are we really sure if Hillary likes the idea of having Chuckie around?..Hmmmm...after all...NY's "senior" senator sounds sooooooo much better than "junior" senator...Chuckie might, just might, be the upcoming next victim of being a friend of the Clintons.....if he's gone....they absolutely control the Dem party in the State...and can annoint the next governor nominee

What a nitwit.

"...I believe that we are God's noble experiment."

What?

God, the Creator of the Universe is somehow forced to "experiment"?

Implying God doesnt know what He is doing? As if He needs some trial and error to see if this whole Constitutional groove actually works.

The entire thought process shows just how adolescent Schumer's faith is.

Thank you for that information, aristeides. Notice how the LA Times spun the story to make Republicans look prudish. The real story is the $$$ Dems. reap from porn peddlers and their many legal defenders.

It's for the children.

*Ahem*

"The liberty we prize is not America's gift to the world, it is God's gift to humanity."

Certainly not God's gift to Democratic hypocracy.

Chuck did rather put his foot in it - offending Judeo-Christian and secular constituents.

We can hope.

*just nods his head*

You have to love when the Democrats get desperate....you never know what they'll say. They do remind me alot of the French, say whatever it takes to survive. How hypocritical for a Liberal to use God in any way shape or form.
