Dead Dog Left Lying In City Street For 2 Days

City Budget Cutbacks May Be To Blame

POSTED: 10:23 p.m. CST February 3, 2003 UPDATED: 10:46 p.m. CST February 3, 2003

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A dog hit by a car Sunday morning has yet to be picked up by the city, and thanks to budget cutbacks, it may be a while before anyone gets around to removing it, KMBC reported.

The dog died at 85th and Boone streets. A neighborhood resident, Bob Soldi, dragged the dog's body to the curb, out of the way of traffic.

"I actually got one of my golf glubs, a three iron, and hooked it on his collar and pulled it over that way," Soldi said.

Soldi called the city to pick up the animal's body, but so far no one has. Cuts to the city budget may be to blame, KMBC reported. Kansas City Animal Control is no longer staffed at night or on weekends, so jobs like this one may have to wait.

"The reaction to people walking down the street sometimes is pretty startling when you can see it," Soldi said.

One pedestrian was surprised to see the dog lying on the curb.

"The city should have been doing their job. They shouldn't have been cutting back on animal control," a passerby said.

KMBC reported that residents will continue to call animal control until the dog's body is picked up.

...or everyone else thought someone else was going to call to have it removed up.

FWIW - during the peak of car-deer accident season here in MI, it takes a week or so for pickup. It's just anpther one of those things that I don't worry about, along with how long a dog rots in the road.

For gods sake! Can't ANYBODY do anything without the help of "Government"?!? Put your damn golf club away and grab a shovel buddy. Plant a little American flag on the grave and go have a cold one....Sheesh!

This used to happen all the time when I was stationed in Puerto Rico. Stray dogs would be hit in the AM on the highways when we would go to San Juan. By the time you returned home in the afternoons, they would have been in the tropical sun all day. They looked more like baloons at that point than dogs.

My sentiments exactly. We're so used to "having the government" take care of us. If a dead dog was stinking up my street, I wouldn't sit there complaining about it. I'd bury the damn thing.

My post was going to be very similar to yours. Yes, someone should have done the right thing and lovingly removed the animal, took it somewhere and buried it with some love and caring. This is a COLD world and too many people depend on the Goverment. This is something that should have been done by responsible adults to spare all of us but most importantly a child/children from having to see something so sad with no one to care. Tsk, tsk...what a world. What a world we live in. I would have done it and I know many others who would have done the same. Shame on all those onlookers. Where was their compassion.

Amen to that. Down here in the bowels of urban USA everyone sits around and waits for the government to do the housework.

I've had people stop and question me as to why I was clearing the garbage off the storm sewage grate in front of my house. They couldn't believe that I'd do the "city's" work for them.

Excellent!! It is a damn dog, for God's sake. If it was somebodies family pet, they should have watched it. It is not a government job to take care of pets.

Dog struck and killed by thermal tile.
Owner to sue NASA.
"We didn't want to move it till the FBI got here." say city workers.
