Is it usual for the white jet in the missing-man formation to point his craft skyward and take off into the blue? I don't remember seeing that part before.

I've seen a lot of missing man flights, and they're done in two ways. Either four aircraft fly over together with the gap already visible, or five aircraft fly over and the one in the "missing man" slot pulls the nose up and climbs, leaving his slot vacant.

Sorry, but I guess, we will have to agree to disagree.

I see spaceflight with it's inherent risks, much along the same lines as combat, and to be frank, As a society there are hard choices to make, and allowing children to suffer that sort of casualty just bothers me.

In Gus Grissoms day, with all due respect to the departed, Laurel Clark would not have been able to go.
