Released Monday morning, a high-speed NASA engineering film shows a piece of debris falling from the large external tank on the space shuttle Columbia's liftoff and hitting the orbiter's left wing. Bear in mind that these are extreme close-ups of a high-speed event. In the top couple of photos, you see only the top of the broken-off piece. Most of it is in the shadows. Depending on which clip you see and how slowly it is run, to the uninitiated person's eye, it can look either like the debris strikes the wing hard enough to pulverize the debris, or the debris strikes a glancing blow and bounces off in the direction of the main and booster engine exhaust.

I have seen the product of your logic before. It's generally interesting, but seldom very sound. Don't give up.
You must be out of your mind. Who would or could conspire to cause something like this? Are you insane?
(Notice from this that your words are the ones which thoughtful FReepers need to "parse.")
I'm not accepting anything NASA will say for granted; when their investigation is completed. But, I do know that the seven who are being honored today are being honored by one of the closest families in this country; their fellow astronauts. I have every faith that those astronauts will indeed work to discover the cause of the death of the friends and that they won't cover up for NASA in any way.
I actually believe those people, with their real knowledge of the program and vehicle, with their years of real experience and training, will do a far better job then a couple of instant answer civilians on FR.
To me, entertaining the rush to judgement of fools and doctored photos is not the sound product of logic, but then again I was pretty convinced buchanan was a fool as well.
Tell me Bozo. What issues are we discussing these days? Are immigration and border control a couple of them? I'm sure you're still patting yourself on the back for helping to make sure we didn't address them before 09/11.
As I already stated in another way, you're out there plugging away, but you have a poor grasp of the issues. Paddle harder fella.
Since "you" wanted to discuss the product of my logic I thought it would be beneficial to provide example. You on the one hand thought buchanan a great presidental candidate which is an example of your reasoning. I on the opposite hand thought buchanan is a fool (the anti-war appeasement article he posted today would do you proud). I only provided that as an example of how our logic differ...which you brought up.
I happen to think that our astronauts are intelligent, experienced and have personal integrity. For me, logic would suggest that I wait on their opinions and findings before I rush to judgement on this terrible accident.
Apparently you don't have such faith in them and base your judgement on the wild accusations of unqualified people who want to blame a large government agency.
Yet another example of our the products of our logic differ. Given those differences I am very pleased that you believe I have a poor grasp of the issues. Thank you.
In 2000 I told you specificly that these problems would come back to bite us on the ass. You laughed at me then. You have the gaul to tell me I'm shallow now.
On Saturday Ron Dettemore stated that the insullation was deemed to be of no problem. His dismissal caused a number of people on the forum to state that he was an idiot to dismiss it. Many came online to trash the folks who made this judgement. And now we're finding out that even he agrees with us. Today he's saying they may have dismissed it prematurely. Now you tell me whether folks were right to question his thoughts on this or not.
On Saturday he was asked if the wing had been inspected while in space, to which he responded that the atronauts couldn't, and besides it wouldn't have done any good anyway. Again we differed. We said photos were able to be taken, why weren't they? Again we were trashed for not leaving NASA to it's own devices. Today there are reports that photos were taken by satellites and the Air Force, two things that people such as myself suggested should have been done.
As evidenced by the revealations on two issues, you are quite frequently wrong.
Then there's this gem from you. "I happen to think that our astronauts are intelligent, experienced and have personal integrity. For me, logic would suggest that I wait on their opinions and findings before I rush to judgement on this terrible accident." Number one, who said our astronauts were anything but intelligent? Number two, logic for you doesn't work very well. Try something different.
"Number one, who said our astronauts were anything but intelligent?"
The people who believe that NASA could hide dangerous secrets from them. The people who believe that they would fly the shuttle if they thought it was dangerous. They people who believe that the astronauts themselves aren't involved with all the aspects of the program. The people who already know the cause of the disaster and are placing blame. The people who think they can do a better job at finding the truth then the astronauts.
Cut to the chase...you and those like you.
Sure, if buchanan were king we would have never been attacked, the Challenger would have been fine and the whole world would love us.
I realize you have once again used your fabulous "LOGIC" to determine that the 19 attackers who were here mostly on expired education visas had nothing to do with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. And it has now faded from your membory that Buchanan has been an advocate of correcting INS problems for about fifteen years.
Addressing your second brain fart in this response, I'd like to note that the latest shuttle disaster was the Columbia.
As for you comment about he whole world loving us, I'll have pitty and give you a pass.
Number one, who said our astronauts were anything but intelligent?
The people who believe that NASA could hide dangerous secrets from them. The people who believe that they would fly the shuttle if they thought it was dangerous. They people who believe that the astronauts themselves aren't involved with all the aspects of the program. The people who already know the cause of the disaster and are placing blame. The people who think they can do a better job at finding the truth then the astronauts.
I just brought up two topics that NASA attempted to gloss over on Saturday. In reaction you offer up some blather about my asserting a hidden NASA agenda.
Since it's already been shown that NASA has had to backtrack on two topics, I'm somewhat mystified that you think the assertion that NASA was wrong is still on the table.
Cut to the chase...you and those like you.
Earth to UFOJackson, brace yourself, sit down, take a few deep breaths, sip some more oxygen if you've got it, not every NASA employee is an astronaut.
Are you okay? Do you want me to call someone?

Why you and TBLSHOW would have all the answers right at your finger tips because you two aren't some corrupt government agency with a vested interest.
If only the whole world were like you two. And of course buchanan was right and if he had been elected king the congress would have bowed to all of his wishes because of his brillance and the whole world would have been a happy place.
Well damn, he isn't king and you and TBLSHOW aren't NASA.
