The UN is a nonsense. Dump it.

Excellent post, my friend. It sums up the reality of things quite concisely. Thanks for posting it.

There's no way that Bush can dump the UN now. It would cost him too much. But if more people started writing articles like this one, public opinion could turn.

The idea of Libya in charge of human rights at the UN and Iraq in charge of weapons inspections should be a pretty good place to start.

"...so long as the UN contributed a 0.1 per cent chance to helping maintain world peace, it was a worthwhile investment. That argument has worn thin."

The UN is nothing but an obstacle to freedom and a haven of legitimacy for tyrants and terrorists.

The UN must be disarmed...all its influence on world events must be eliminated.

Ivan...day in, day out, I listen to anti-American sentiment, and people telling me 'it's all about the oil', or the US 'propped up Saddam in the past'...etc. etc. et al, ad nauseum.

And I've also listened to people talk about the 'innocents who will die' as a result of a war.

But NOT one. Not a single one has been able to reassure me that if Saddam had the capability (which he has tried so very much to obtain over the last 12 years) to kill, and maim everyone in the Western world he wouldn't do it.

I keep telling people 'YES, of COURSE there are going to be innocent, civilian casualties in this war'. But those casualties will be FAR lessened by a humane, democratic coalition going into Iraq, than the casualties at the hands of a MADMAN (or one of his sons) in the not too distant future.

The BBC is by now pretty much an agitprop organisation for the old Left.

Ditto AP. Two biggest purveyors of leftist propaganda in the world.

Darling, they need to remember - America and Britain use precision weapons to hit military targets. Saddam uses a secret police to keep his boot on the neck of the people, and chemical weapons to gas masses indiscrimnately to instill more fear.

And that's the real difference. I don't recall Saddam going to the UN for authorisation to invade Iran or Kuwait for that matter.

Love, Ivan

"day in, day out, I listen to anti-American sentiment,"

Wow, just wondering what kind of place you work in.........don't answer.

I know we get in corners in our life, it has happened to me. But, it was my objective to get the heck out of it and I did. Litstening to this kind of spew day after day has to be a drag. Best of luck. Hey, eat some chocolate, it helps.

I live in Ireland. So it's not just my work place.

Actually as a journalist, my work place is one of the few places I get to chew the cud with people who are actually up to speed on the 'War on Iraq' and actually remember Desert Storm.

You may find this surprising. But most of my journalistic colleagues (the writers, if not the sub-editors/production people) are pretty much in favour of taking Saddam out.

The journalist I sit beside in the office, (He's a former Reuteurs journo, whose job brought him all over the world, including many Arab nations), is all in favour of the action being taken by the US now.

He just hopes that someone goes in and sorts out Mugabwe in Zim soon too.

Because people know better than to take a joke seriously, the UN is worse than a joke.

How I envy your British conservative press. Just imagining what it would be like if half the US media were conservative gives me chill bumps.

...a collection of quasi-Marxist and Islamist dictatorships with a few whey-faced Europeans strutting about.

My favorite line from the column. Best depiction of the contemporary United Nations I have ever seen.

Great post.

During the period of 1946 through 1970 the UN did have some legitmacy and in some cases it was an effective forum for addressing international security problems. This phase of the UN's history was chracterized by a structure that gave almost complete autonomy in its operations to the great powers on the security council.

At this satge, the UN has attained self-parodic status and only the most egregious state actions like Iraq's invasion of Kuwait are sufficient to provoke action on the security council.
