Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that its was God's retribution on Americans. "We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said.

"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.

Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up shortly before its return to earth.

"Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason (in 1981), now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said.

The venom spewed by the "compassionate party" is frightening. They are also accusing Bush of blowing up the Columbia, and quoting the Bible.

First Amendment aside, I believe that these people troglodytes, and all like them, are the sole reason the country is in the shape it is today. I further more believe that these idiots right to speak, but not be heard, should be responded to with fists and ball bats. Just my honest opinion, like it or not.

I also believe, that contrary to derogatory comments about 'sandpeople' etc., the people of Iraq are not ALL guilty of the actions of those in power. Condemning all for the actions of a few, would be like blaming you or I for the actions of President Clinton. Sure....we spoke out about the dislike/hatred we had for this man and his actions. But that is because WE COULD.

I would not presume to arrogantly state what is or is not God's will, but I hope and pray that he is guiding us to bring some semblance of freedom and comfort to the Iraqi populace.

The only people that are likely to have true loyalty to Saddam are those (1) who got lucrative positions on his staff; (2) those who have blood ties to his family or are from his village; (3) crazed Sunnis who actually enjoy watching him deal with the Kurds and Shiites in a brutal manner.

I'm not convinced that this "car mechanic" was a car mechanic. How did he know the name of an Israeli Colonel? Iraq has been caught before using officials of the central government as the subjects of "man-on-the-street" interviews, a practice which thus far the Western media has been all too happy to accomodate.

Further, even if this was a real "man-on-the-street," many Iraqis believe as many as 1 in 7 adults are paid informants for Saddam. Therefore, if you talk to them on the street they will say only what they would say to Saddam himself. I am not at all convinced the average Iraqi is happy about this.

Now, as for the Palestinians...

I should have seperated my comments to give you a better understanding of my train of thought.

High places meant in our government, or any major agency that could be a potential risk. Just a few weeks ago it was found that an illegal was working at the White House. During the Clinton admin, FBI had to basically do away with background checks, I believe according to Gary Aldrich, due to many employees not passing the tests. We have no idea how many individuals that are still in place from the Clinton administration and who legitimately passed their background checks. Hopefully reorganizing the Homeland Security Department will settle many of these issues.

As I stated this could be just an unfortunate, untimely accident~but until a full investigation, we're all speculating on what could have happened.

Keats, thanks for your response. It is God who reveals a matter and I won't speak of what He will or won't do. That was not my intentions of my post. We have earthly enemies that hate this country. I am pleased that we stand with Israel just for that cause of those who bless Israel shall be blessed.
