I thought that was how it went but I wasn't sure. Do we know at what point they would have gone into blackout as it seems that NASA was still in contact with the Shuttle and lost contact but not because it went into the blackout phase?
Was looking up atmosphere and at the point the shuttle was at it seems to be pretty thin unlike when it gets closer to ground.

I took a little flower basket up to the NASA entrance earlier. I scribbled "freepers" on the sympathy card and added freerepublic.com.
There were more media people than anyone else when I got there. The media people are parked all up and down NASA Road 1. A couple of them wanted to interview me. How odd. I told them I was just there to deliver something for some friends of mine.
As I was leaving more and more people were arriving.
