Were does this fit in, historicaly, as to national shocks over the last 62 years?
1) Attack on Pearl Harbor
2) 9/11
3) JFK assasinated
4) Reagan shot
5) Challenger
6) Columbia
Comments anyone?

I would alter your list only in putting 9-11 first and Pearl Harbor second. The gov't wasn't totally caught off guard with Pearl harbor and the world was already in a state of war (since Sept.1, 1939). While there were some people in the gov't who knew that we were vulnerable to terroristic organizations, even in the wildest dreams they didn't foresee this. Just MHO.

You left off the Iranian hostage crisis and the bungled rescue mission in the desert. Also, what about the Cuban Missle Crisis. That was the only time I ever feared for my life. Also, TET offensive?

The world simply hasn't stopped today like it has with other national shocks, including Challenger. Most of the mailing lists I subscribe to continue to receive posts as if today's disaster did not occur at all; the people in the Best Buy I was in this morning when the news broke just said, "Oh, that's bad," and went on about their shopping.
