Dear Friends of The Michael Fund,
Since the publication of our Fall 1998 newsletter Prelude to the Holocaust, there has been an avalanche of media reports on modern day eugenic practices in the United States and abroad. As Melanie Phillips of the London Sunday Times noted in her article of July 25, 1999 detailing the second-class medical treatment given to Down syndrome children and other mentally and physically handicapped persons in Britain, the whiff of eugenics is growing stronger by the day.
This summer, in an address to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in France, test-tube baby physiologist Robert G. Edwards stated that Soon it will be a sin of parents to have a child that carries a heavy burden of genetic disease. We are entering a world where we have to consider the quality of our children. Edwards said that new reproductive technologies, which combine invitro fertilization (IVF) with pre-implantation diagnosis, offer at-risk parents the option of having only unaffected children.
Meanwhile, researchers from the Wolfson Institute of Preventative Medicine in London, reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine, believe that a series of six non-evasive prenatal tests administered to pregnant women during the first two trimesters of pregnancy, could result in the detection (and presumed abortion) of 800 previously unrecognized cases of Down syndrome which occur in the United States each year. On the other hand, the British researchers claim that that by combining ultrasound with more extensive maternal blood sampling, 1,400 unaffected (and usually wanted) children could be saved children who die in miscarriages brought about by the more invasive prenatal techniques of amniocentesis or chorion villus sampling (CVS). The math here is both simple and telling. For every child with Down syndrome detected prenatally and killed by abortion, two unaffected children die from the amniocentesis or CVS.
This eugenic insanity can also be seen in the increase in wrongful-birth lawsuits filed by parents who claim the attending physician denied them prenatal diagnostic services and hence robbed them of the option of aborting their handicapped child. Other couples have filed lawsuits against attending physicians because they claim they mistakenly aborted their wanted unaffected child based on inaccurate prenatal diagnostic information indicating fetal anomaly.
Then there is the matter of the dreaded complication associated with late-term eugenic abortions that of a live birth which brings us face to face with neonatal infanticide.
In April of 1999, the Alberta Report, an Edmonton-based weekly newsmagazine released an explosive cover story on the contemporary practice of infanticide at Calgary Foothills Hospital. It appears that the Canadian hospitals genetic termination program has resulted in the live birth of both affected and normal babies mistakenly identified as defective, who on doctors orders and with parental approval, were subsequently denied any treatment including the administration of nutritional fluids and oxygen normally accorded premature infants. The case which broke the story involved baby Doe who was genetically terminated just five weeks before his delivery date. Nurses, forbidden from giving the baby any food or liquids, rocked him for twelve hours until he finally died. Hospital administrators have denied any wrong doing claiming that their genetic termination program meets the requirements of the eugenic guidelines established by the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons.
While Canadians are debating the merits of genetic termination or the lack thereof, the Dutch are also busy debating two aspects of modern-day eugenics - first the use of aborted and miscarried babies for lethal, non-therapeutic medical experimentation and as a source of spare body parts, and secondly, the extension of the right to euthanazia to incurably ill youth age twelve and over. Further East, the Czech parliament has begun a full-scale investigation of the death of at least 49 seriously ill patients at a teaching hospital in Ostrava, who were alive, but declared dead, so that their organs could be harvested for organ transplantation.
Closer to home, in October of 1998, Professor French Anderson of the University of Southern California (L. A.) asked the National Institutes of Health Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee for a waiver to conduct his initial gene therapy experiments on TBAs to-be-aborted women and their babies. Though Science Correspondent for Britains Electronic Telegraph suggests Andersons request has caused an ethical uproar, in the United States, there was, in fact, no uproar at all. For, as our current newsletter on the March of Dimes discloses, the practice of lethal experimentation on babies destined for abortion has been routinely used for more than 40 years by geneticists wanting to perfect their techniques of amniocentesis, chorion villus sampling and fetoscopy.
And the University Press of New England has just announced the publication of by Nancy Gallagher new book, Breeding Better Vermonters: The Eugenics Project in the Green Mountain State which details the states eugenic advocacy programs of the 1920s and 30s that paved the way to the passage of laws permitting the sterilization of the handicapped or feebleminded.
Yes, eugenics is certainly as alive today as it was in Hitlers time. Perhaps even more so, since today the Eugenics Establishment has successfully managed to pursuade many, though not all , parents to cooperate in the killing of their handicapped children.
That is why, in addition to our primary mission of financing truly therapeutic genetic research into treatments and a possible cure for Down syndrome and related chromosomal disorders, we are also dedicated to defending the right-to-life of all handicapped peoples born and preborn against the rising tide of eugenics.
Since its founding more than twenty years ago, one of the most frequently asked questions about The Michael Fund has been, Why do you call yourself the pro-life alternative to the March of Dimes. We trust Part II of our Friends of The Michael Fund Newsletter answers that question and other similar questions related to the Eugenics Establishment yesterday and today. Additional material, including A March of Dimes Primer The A-Z of Eugenic Killing is also available on our web site at www.michaelfund.org or in a booklet format from our Pittsburgh office.
Please note that this mailing includes a separate bibliography covering our two-part series on eugenics. If you reprint our newsletter in your publication please include this bibliography and credit The Michael Fund, 500 A Garden City Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15146 at the end of the article. Also, if you are unable to locate original source materials cited in the bibliography that may be out-of-print, we may be able to assist you. Just send a SSAE to The Michael Fund office with your inquiry.
In our next Friends of The Michael Fund Newsletter we will have our long awaited update on our current research grant to Dr. Paddy Jim Baggot; a story on The Michael Funds first visit to the Lejeune Center at St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains, N.Y.; and other regular newsletter features. Back issues of our newsletter outlining Dr. Baggots research program and giving details on the Lejeune Center are available on request in case you might have missed them.
In 1994 The Michael Fund filed its historic Human Embryo lawsuit against the National Institutes of Health (DHHS/NIH) and carry our case to the Supreme Court.
Is it any wonder that we, who are privileged to work so closely with The Michael Fund, have always felt truly blessed?
Sincerely,
Randy Engel Randy Engel, Executive Director International Foundation for Genetic Research/The Michael Fund Editor, Friends of The Michael Fund Newsletter

It was an organization formed to perpetuate the cronyism, corruption and liaisons a part of Roosevelt's vaunted birthday party favors in quest of a cure for polio.
Let me scan you some more of the book to explain. I posted it years ago but within a thread somewhere and I've no hope of finding it now.

There is a up to $500.00 (not to exceed ever $25,000) fine to any one that kills an 'endangered' fox, or upsets/touches certain turtle nest eggs along our shores. Under the detailed listings of the federal Endangered Species Act.
There is a $350.00 to $500.00 'amount due' to kill the human species. (AKA abortion) And in second/third human trimesters; scissors are jabbed into the HUMAN head and the brains are sucked out-In elective surgeries- daily, in the United States, all under the guise of a woman's "right." The only real "right" is the "right" to remain silent.
When will humans become "endangered" and protected?
When will the so called pro-"choicers" realize basic science skills of the food-chain? Human's are NOT at the bottom of the food-chain.
Do they really see what they do, with their political correctness all in the guise of a "woman's right"?
