Powell to Go for Broke at the UN

U.S. indictment of Iraq will be televised live from the Security Council next week, and could bring the crisis to a head.

After weeks of dampening expectations for "smoking gun" evidence against Iraq, the Bush administration is now teeing up an "Adlai Stevenson moment." That's diplomat-speak for the instant in which a U.S. official trumps all naysayers at the United Nations by hauling out graphic, incontrovertible evidence that its enemy is lying. Stevenson, as President John F. Kennedy's UN ambassador in 1962, slam-dunked the Soviets during a heated Security Council debate by producing satellite photographs that disproved Moscow's denials that missiles had been stationed in Cuba. Secretary of State Colin Powell hopes to produce a similar effect when he presents U.S. evidence against Iraq at a special session of the Security Council convened at U.S. request next Wednesday.

I knew you were kidding. Sorry you got attacked. Put a little smiley face after your words or a "sarcasm" note so everybody gets it. :-)

There are two competing articles on the Powell appearance next week. AP is reporting "no smoking gun" and downplaying everything...Time says Powell is going for broke...time will tell.

-----------------------

A passing bit of momentary drama for Stevenson, but before it was over the Soviets got everything they wanted.

Not trying to be a party-pooper, but weren't the photos Stevenson showed taken by U-2s, not a re-tasked recon bird?

There are several reasons to go back to the SC and lay out the documentation, and then watch the Security Council vote ... most of them are in the U.S. House and Senate, with their longknives poised at their own throats. hehehehe

So we must drag ourselves in front of the UN and PROVE that we are NOT LIARS, this pre-supposes then that the UN now believes that Saddam is telling the TRUTH until we prove otherwise. Now how did we get into this pickle? I thought the onus of proof by UN Resolution 1441 was on Saddam. I see nothing in there that say the US must prove anything.

He'll get it right.

Luther Powell was a proud man, and he raised a good son. Colin loves America. There are no perfect ends in this situation, but Bush has a great team. I have confidence in them. All.

There are two competing articles on the Powell appearance next week.

The US delegation has requested a live worldwide feed. We are revealing sources. Would we do that just for a circumstantial case, no matter how heavy?

The former CIA analyst on O'Reilly said he thought we had penetrated their computer system. Powell has requested AV equipment for the presentation. Sounds like more than yet another batch of inferences.

I wonder if ABCCBSNBCFOXPMSNBCCNNPBSNPR et. al. will have the cojones to broadcast this live? This could be the TV show of the decade, possibly more important than the SOTU.

Yeah. If we're all this nervous, imagine how nervous the UN, Democrats, Saddam, various terrorists must be.

I want it to be a blockbuster, of course. I also want us to just go in and get it over with. Of course, since I have a very low tolerance for irresolution, I have felt that way for way too long.

Do you suppose Bill Clinton would have allowed Madeline Albright to steal his limelight? President Bush respects his people, and it shows in their loyalty. When's the last time we've seen a Presidency with such strong people in the top leadership positions?

Time (no Bush lover/liberal mag) is setting the bar so high it can say Powell didn't deliver. Powell could show a video with resolution comparable to Saddam's colonoscopy with baby nukes in it and Time wouldn't be satisfied.
