Peterson tackles rumors, reports

Peterson tackles rumors, reports

Scott Peterson conducted several televised interviews at his home on Wednesday, address-ing numerous allegations and rumors surrounding the investigation into the disappearance of his wife, Laci.

By 5 p.m., more than a dozen TV trucks had set up camp near the Petersons' house on Covena Avenue in Modesto's La Loma neighborhood.

Wednesday night, Peterson called police when other reporters -- hopeful for an interview -- followed him to his back gate and remained on his property after he told them to leave. Officers arrived, stayed 10 minutes and left, making no arrests.

Peterson declined to be interviewed by The Bee, saying that he was upset with two articles the newspaper had published.

One of the articles described Peterson at a New Year's Eve vigil for his wife, saying he was laughing and smiling a good deal of the time. He did not say what the other story was.

"With the feelings I have about the newspaper right now, I am not interested in talking," Peterson said by phone. "The articles need to have more with Laci in them and not be focused on me."

Laci Peterson's family reported her missing Christmas Eve. The 27-year-old is more than eight months pregnant with her first child.

Scott Peterson, 30, said he last saw his wife at 9:30 a.m. the day before Christmas when he left for a fishing trip and she prepared to go for a walk with their dog.

Police say they have not named Scott Peterson as a suspect, nor have they ruled him out of the investigation.

Wednesday began with the second part of Peterson's videotaped interview on ABC Television's "Good Morning America," with co-host

Diane Sawyer talking not only with Peterson but with his family.

In the interview, Peterson said:

Both he and Laci have $250,000 life insurance policies, taken out two years ago. He called untrue a report that he took out such a policy on his wife only last summer.

His wife may not have opened the drapes Christmas Eve morning because it was probably 40 degrees outside, and keeping the drapes closed helps keep the house warm. Family members and neighbors have said that Laci Peterson opened the drapes every day.

He routinely cuts his hands in his work on farms. Peterson, a fertilizer salesman, made the comment and showed his hands in response to reports that police had found blood in one of his and Laci's vehicles.

He loaded large umbrellas to take to his warehouse on Christmas Eve. A neighbor reportedly saw Peterson putting something into a vehicle that day.

During the interview, Peterson described his marriage as "glorious" even though he admitted to cheating on his pregnant wife. "We took care of each other very well," he said. "She was amazing. She is amazing."

Asked about the baby boy due within weeks, he responded: "That was, it's so hard."

At his home, Peterson sat down with several news outlets. He went through the interviews alone, without an attorney.

Speaking with Gloria Gomez of Sacramento TV station KOVR, Peterson explained why he said he told his wife about his affair with Amber Frey: "It was the right thing to do. And, as you know, when you're not doing the right thing, it eats you up. You know you feel sick to your stomach and you can't function. And you have a hard time, you know, looking at someone."

Throughout Wednesday, people drove and walked by the Peterson house, apparently to get a closer look.

"It's innocent until proven guilty in a court of law," said Elvira Varse, who lives a few streets away. "But he's guilty until he's proven innocent in this neighborhood."

Among the media throng was a pair of shock jocks from a Los Angeles radio station. When Peterson came home, one of them yelled into a megaphone: "Nobody believes your story."

Lyanne Melendez, a reporter with San Francisco radio station KGO, walked up to the shock jocks' radio van and told the DJs: "That's just bad journalism."

One of them responded: "We're not journalists. We're entertainers."

Bee staff photographer Adrian Mendoza contributed to this report.

SP danced around this one.

Both he and Laci have $250,000 life insurance policies, taken out two years ago. He called untrue a report that he took out such a policy on his wife only last summer.

Someone should email NE, and L84AD8 can you confirm any of this with what SP is now saying?

Well, maybe he did it. He probably did. The police should keep the pressure up, etc.

But that said, who knows anything about the park Laci was supposed to visit that day?

God help us all if she is at the bottom of some inadequately searched ravine there in the park.

No cadaver dogs were sent to search, from what I know. So its either a very small and flat park, or they didn't search hard enough.

Thanks for the ping.

OK Scott, so you tell Laci about your affair cause it's the right thing to do and you have a hard time looking at Laci....but then you continue your affair???

Yeah, the whole world is stooopid, we believe you.

Another thing Scott said in the interview was that the baby was due Feb 16th....every other article and her family reported the due date as Feb 10th.

Oh and a tidbit, I read that Amber's birthday is Feb 10th.

Yay John and Ken from L.A.! They are not DJs or "shock jocks," but in your face talk radio hosts, who were disgusted with SP's little one-day search of L.A. with water bottles with Laci's photo on them and little flyers, as if the entire world didn't already see Laci's photos every night on TV.

So they went up to Modesto to do their show live in front of the Peterson house, and they had bottles of water with SCOTT's photo on them, and their one-day trip was "a search for the TRUTH."

John was the one yelling at Scott, "Scott! What did you do with Laci, Scott?" and "No one believes any of your stories, Scott!" He did the same thing to Westerfield before little Danielle's body was found. So he's a little confrontational - it shows he has a pair and it makes for good radio.

As much as I have been following this case, the first time I really heard about the umbrellas in the big blue tarp was yesterday. My mouth fell open even bigger than it did watching Scott lie his head off on TV.

Isn't it deadly incriminating that on the day Laci disappears, Scott takes two eight-foot umbrellas wrapped in a blue tarp and carries them to his car? His explanation was that it was raining??? Excuse me??? They are UMBRELLAS. Why the h*ll would you need to WRAP umbrellas in a TARP to keep them from getting wet???

And why take the umbrellas to the warehouse, anyway? On Christmas eve, at that?? Is this not the MOST suspicious behavior yet?

Supposedly parts of the umbrellas are missing, possibly the weighted holders that go at the foot of them, which could be weighted with water or sand, or possibly cement??

And a large blue tarp was found in the marina where Scott said he went fishing. LE took it in for testing. Hmmmm.

I hope they get him on this soon. Of all the evidence I have heard, being witnessed carrying something incredibly long and heavy and wrapped in a tarp out to his truck the day Laci went missing is at the top of the list of suspicious activities.

The guy from the local Fox station that interviewed him, Ted Rowlands, said last night, dogs (didn't say if they were specifically cadaver or just search dogs)did search the park, and they also had taken Laci's dog around the area.

Scott complains about all articles and interviews done, ala Gary Condit!

Also heard on one of the shows last night that Scott had hired a P.I., but none of the interviews I saw addressed this, or what the heck the P.I. was doing.

Well, if he was holding a candle and talking to his niece about how pretty the candles were, but the Modesto Bee reported that he was holding an alcoholic beverage and schmoozing with babes, then, even though I don't think highly of Scott, the Bee sucks.

I won't cheer for a newspaper that lies, no matter who they intend to smear.

OT: We used to get The John and Ken Show" here in Kansas City when they were syndicated and they were great fun to listen to. Of course, we used to get "Neal Boortz" too, but then Susquehanna bought the station and it's have gone downhill from there. The only redeeming factor is that the station carries "Sean Hannity"in the afternoon...
