Canada to wait for US request before deciding on anti-missile shield

OTTAWA (AFP) Jan 28, 2003
Canada's government will wait to receive a US request before deciding whether to join in a missile defense shield, Prime Minister Jean Chretien told parliament Monday.

"Perhaps we should wait to have a request for any participation before we give an answer," he said, ahead of a Canadian delegation's visit Tuesday to Washington for talks on the issue.

Leon Benoit, of the opposition Alliance Canadienne, accused the government of taking a "confused" approach in its foreign policy.

"The foreign affairs minister is opposed to missile defence, but the defence minister says the government has yet to determine what role, if any, it was to play in defending Canadians from missile attacks," Benoit said in questioning Chretien about the delegation's mission.

"This is just another foreign affairs issue on which this government is confused," he said.

The Canadian delegation, which including the both the defence and foreign ministers, will "explore the possibility of Canada's involvement in ballistic missile defense," Defense Minister John McCallum said in announcing the mission on January 9.

US President George W. Bush in December announced plans to deploy a limited missile shield by 2004 that would include 10 ground-based interceptor missiles at Fort Greeley in Alaska.

Ok, we build the system and when we see one of North Korea's nukes heading for Ottawa, do we then ask Canada if they want to join?

In other words:

"We will, of course, accept your ongoing protection from foreign threats, but we reserve the right to do so grudingly and with much francovian bitching. And we will, in no way, contribute any funding."

Wouldn't the proper statement be something like this?

Canada would welcome the provision of a defense sheild to protect from missile attack. When a system is developed by the United States we'll be very interested in reviewing it's potential. If it appears to be an effective deterant, we'll consider implenting the system ourselves.

How long before Canada starts demanding that we pay them for the right to defend them?

Since Canada's population is basically arrayed along the US border, I don't think we have any choice but to intercept any missile headed for Canada, whether they want to be saved or not.

I'm not sure, but it seems a valid question at times doesn't it.

Cretin is a jerk. He must have been elected by jerks. Let the B@st@rds come crawling on knees begging for our help.

The Canadians need to suffer at their own hands to really know how their stupid socialist healthcare is wrecking their quality of life. Don't give them a missile shield. Don't let them get medical treatments in the US. They love Castro so let them go to Cuba for their healthcare. Screen them harder at the border to catch the Muslims sneaking accross the border.

Why should we even ask them? Nobody is going to attack them.

They've already capitulated in every way to everyone.

Whoa! cowboy....down boy. Some of what you say is true. But keep in mind that Cretin is winning his elections with under 45% of the vote. He is also being kept in power largely by "New France"(Quebec)and "immigrant/liberal alley"(southern Ontario).

We have enough problems with an inequitable parlimentary system. And love him as I do....you mercifully just managed to get GW elected. If your fellow compatriots listen to voices like your's....the other 55% of us up here, will be even further up the creek!

When the US intercepts and knocks down a North Korean missle aimed at Japan
or Alaska, everyone will want to play with our new toys.
We should tell Canada to stay home.

BTW, I find Spacedaily.com to very unfriendly to nuclear power
and other technological improvements. They are always sneaking in enviro-wacko
nut articles while pretending to be pro technology.
That site is not what appears to be on first glance.
