A retired Los Alamos National Laboratory deputy director, Richard Burick, has died from what police say is an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say Burick, 63, died Thursday in the parking lot of the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area.
Los Alamos Police Chief Richard Melton says Burick had been suffering from prostate cancer.
Burick was deputy director for lab operations when he retired last year.
Melton says Burick co-wrote a book with Los Alamos Fire Chief Doug MacDonald about the Cerro Grande Fire, which burned nearly 43,000 acres in the Jemez Mountains in May 2000.
Melton says the book's proceeds were donated to the victims of the fire.
