Mid-Air Collision Over Northwest Denver

UPDATED: 6:31 p.m. MST January 24, 2003

DENVER -- Two small planes collided in midair over northwest Denver around 5:15 p.m. Friday, raining wreckage and bodies on homes below.

A witness, Dominic Frederico, said he saw parts of one planes land near him at 26th & Lowell in the Highlands neighborhood.

The larger plane came down near 33rd & Irving, witnesses said.

A person landed on Brown Elementary School at 2550 Lowell Blvd., 7NEWS reported. Police had reports the injured person was a passenger on one of the planes.

One of the falling planes hit a two-story home at 35th & Moncrief, starting a fire and collapsing the home. It was not known if anyone was inside the home when the plane hit. The fate of the people on board the plane was not immediately known.

"We do have the fuselage in the back part of this house and our concern is that we can't get the gas shut off in the house," said Lt. Larry Trujillo, Denver firefighter. He said the fire was still burning.

The other plane landed upside down in a back yard.

The house that was hit is only 1 and 1/2 blocks from my friends house. My friend is fine. Now they are reporting some minor injuries from people who were on the ground.

This is about 1.5 miles from my house. Can't see much due to darkness, but there are maybe a half dozen helicopters and small planes circling the area. Glad to hear your friend is ok.
