It's not the matter that the divorce happened....it's when they RE-MARRY that they are in mortal sin...adultery.....UNLESS there is an annullment.

Spokesman Russ Lopez deflected the challenge from the bishop and criticized Weigand for "telling the faithful how to practice their faith."
Governor Davis should be impeached for allowing his foolish spokesthing to infringe on the 1st Amendment in his name.

Communion is a very public event for both the recipient and the priest. Next Sunday there will be reporters and photographers accompanying the governor to Mass. If he lines up for and is given the Real Presence after the bishop's injunction, all Hell will break loose. Does anybody know what church Davis attends? Pro-life activists should be on hand with Rosaries to pray for his conversion and with signs take advantage of the media coverage.
Excellent post.

If you receive Holy Communion in a state of mortal sin, you are condemned -- each and every time you receive.
Promoting, passing laws to support child killing, and even bragging about the murder of little children cerainly would qualify.

What a great quote. Oh how the truth is so very bittersweet at times!

Thanks for the ping. The governor (and his mouthpiece) are really channeling the evil one, aren't they? Beginning with "non serviam" and ending with the lie that Catholic souls belong to him and not the Church. Truly an unmasking.

My reaction is mixed.
On the positive side, Bishop Weigand's public pronouncement is very good for being made, for being made strongly, and for being picked up in the press. I hope it is followed through, and imitated by other bishops.
After thirty years of general indifference from the episcopacy, it's nice to see one taking a stand.
On the other hand, it is not a formal excommunication or interdict. It has no teeth. Gov. Davis is, in effect, told to police himself on the matter.
And Davis can certainly find "dissenting" theologians who will back him up, or who will use the theory of the "seemless garment" or the theory of the "four legs of the table" to say that his stand on welfare or the death penalty "makes up" for his support for aborticide.
I seem to recall watching Bill and Hillary receiving Communion at a Catholic Cathedral on TV at the hands of a bishop.

<> There will always be both wheat and chaff inside the Church. For some, that is reason enough to finger-point and say ,"Look, they have sinners in there, so I can do as I desire. I won't hear them unless they first do thus and such..."
Jesus knew the Catholic Church would contain sinners, sometimes great sinners and, sometimes, great numbers of great sinners, nevertheless, He said "He who hears you hears me.". He didn't qualify it one iota. The Catholic Church He identified as "The Pillar and Ground of Truth" - despite the personal sinfulnesss of its Hierarchy.
The fact of the matter is the Catholic Church is a hospital for the Spiritually ill - and that includes me and (presumably) thee - unless you are impeccable<>

"As your bishop, I have to say clearly that anyone politician or otherwise who thinks it is acceptable for a Catholic to be pro-abortion is in very great error, puts his or her soul at risk, and is not in good standing with the church," Weigand said. "Such a person should have the integrity to acknowledge this and choose of his own volition to abstain from receiving Holy Communion until he has a change of heart." Thank God someone had the guts to say this. It's about time. I'm sad to say our bishop has never found this courage.
