At least you actually got to hear a case. I was called for jury duty once but never got to hear any cases. I got as far as the court room but at the last minute, the case was settled. The judge said some appropriate things about doing your duty, etc. That's been it for me so far.

Actually, for the record, I don't think one should be a prosecutor if one couldn't serve fairly on the jury. I don't think they're guilty just 'cause they are arrested. But the rare ones for which that's not the case -- I got rid of those jackets long before trial.

A little occupational joke: "We have way too many guilty people to prosecute to bother with the innocent ones too."

My sister's not stupid. But she's pretty left.

What she is is a little delusional. She wishes that government was more efficient than it is. She is hopeful that a new social program will fix everything. She wants things to be better and she views government as her friend to do that. She listens mostly to NPR. She lives, in short, in a bubble. She lives in Vermont.

Underway! Shift Colors!

Navy personnel and families are hearing these words coming from the Boatswains Mate of the Watch as ships are deploying for overseas duty.

Old Glory is struck from the flagstaff on the stern of the ships and hoisted from the ship's mast when the last line that holds the ship to the pier is removed.

Family and friends stand on the pier watching as these defenders of freedom begin another journey. Sailors man the rails as the ship leaves port.

Many months later the ships return to their homeports and the process is reversed with family and friends on the pier straining to find their "hero" among those manning the rails. This time however, the Boatwains Mate passes the word, "Moored! Shift colors!" as soon as the first line is attached to the bullard on the pier.

Godspeed to these Navy and Marine personnel and thank you.

My favorite jury cartoon is hard to describe but here goes.

It's a Conrad Lorenz cartoon about a jury in extreme alarm -- some have their hair straight up, others are gasping for breath, some have already collapsed. Some appear to be screaming.

And the lawyer who has just addressed the jury is leering salaciously toward them.

The judge is saying, angrily, "The jury will disregard that last remark!"
