My point is it beats the Tijuana Jail or a Turkish prison.

No idea. I haven't followed the case. My interest was only in the escape.

Hmmmm, fresh coissants, soft brie, ripe strawberries dipped in milk chocolate finished off with a fabulous bottle of french wine. Heavenly.

It was reported this guy was SF yes/no?

Yes. I think he was one of those "one enlistment" SF guys. Nobody seemed to know him very well.

From Mrs. Mahers profile page:

Fighting for my innocent husband held 1000 days on 8/30/2002 Monaco
is holding my husband hostage after a forced confession
(tied down all
four extremities, catheter placed, beaten and kept awake for 3 days. He
was shown my passport (I was kidnapped from the police and my
passport was forcefully taken from me). He was forced to sign the already
written in French document in order to allow me to go home to our three
young children. DNA EXCLUDES my husband from the two dead
bodies. Autopsy Results clearly show the bodies did not die of smoke
inhalation. Drug tests of my husband are NEGATIF for everything
including alcohol. Fire Report clearly shows several ignited sites one hour
AFTER my husband was in surgery for multiple stabbings.

Maybe you can get Mrs. Maher back on your show to discuss this escape....and recapture.

Nevertheless, in the United States at least, the law most assuredly DOES make such a distinction.

FWIW, if you were on a jury panel, you would very likely be stricken by the defense attorney in voir dire.

IIRC, 2nd Degree Murder is often called "Aggravated Manslaughter." It depends on the jurisdiction, of course.

Personally, I believe Maher's fate was just. The only injustice is the continual ranting you find on these threads, protesting his innocence.

It has gotten old--though not as old as the David Westerfield groupies' schtick got.

How the heck does DNA enter in to this? Mrs. Maher may be a very nice lady, but her loyalty to her hubby is blind.

She seems willing to suspend even the most reasonable disbelief in order to make this guy out to be a martyr.

It's interesting how these kinds of threads get started, and why certain people become causes celebres on FR.

Unfortunately, most of the purblind sycophants of people like David Westerfield and Ted Maher lend their support for the most ephemeral of reasons.

In Westy's case, it was because his brother was quoted in the news as saying that Westy was a Republican. That gained him an INSTANT fan-base on FR.

Maher is a former Green Beret, and therefore above reproach no matter what the evidence shows.

For all our vaunted collected genius, FR sure has its share of emotion-drenched, reason-bereft obsessions.

"Maher is a former Green Beret, and therefore above reproach no matter what the evidence shows."

Now you KNOW that's NOT true.

While the fact that Ted is a former Green Beret (and a medic....) got me interested in the case.....it was the conflicting evidence that made me look into the case even further.

Looking at the entire case coldly and rationally...a lot of it just didn't add up.

Add to the problems with time lines...motives.....and hardcore evidence...the other problems of HOW Maher was treated by Monaco...of HOW his wife was treated....and the only conclusion that I can come to is that he is innocent.

If that differs from your conclusion.....well it won't be the first or the last.

DNA enters into this because the dead did not die of smoke inhalation. If you check out the case, you will find that too many things do not make sense. That, plus the fact that he was held for over two years without a trial makes me suspicious.
