One wonders how much of Ms. Levin's problem with Novak is the fact that he is a Jew who converted to Catholicism?

I suspect that it's simply Novak's constant pro-Arab remarks that have Ms. Levin concerned. He's not just anti-Israel, he's anti-anything that bugs Arabs.

In December 2002, in a story about Christmas in Bethlehem, a CNN colleague again countered Novak's distorted assertions regarding Israeli conduct, this time his claim Israel was not permitting "any Christmas decorations" in Bethlehem. The reporter responded that it was not the Israelis "banning decorations. It is the Palestinians. The local officials have decided, in a form of protest, not to have any holiday decorations..." Novak is a knee-jerk pathological Israel hater.

To: jackbill
i've read that before and was wondering where you heard that.

Novak has been impossible to listen to since 911. Every stance he takes is off-kilter.
I never really liked Novak much --- too much of an impossible to please, rather smug sourpuss for my taste. But I always respected the fact that he cited reading Whittaker Chambers' Witness as a life-changing event in his life. Post-911, even the Chambers connection can't save the guy.
Novak's position as a conservative in the punditocracy has become an embarrassment.

When Novak's colleagues further interjected that the Hamas official was "himself a terrorist," he retorted, "Well, why do you call him a terrorist? I mean, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." I must have missed it. Did Thomas Paine blow up the equivalent of today's pizza parlors. Did he invade to homes of Tory sympathizers and murder them and their children in their beds? Did he advocate such methods?

I always thought that Novak is an Arab, just like Helen Thomas.

What, specifically, has Novak said that is "pro-Arab" instead of anti-Israel. I have always felt that Novak, instead of being pro- or anti-Israel, is more pro-US, even if it means promoting a policy that may not necessarily benefit Israel.
To: Cacophonous
He's pro-US, in the sense that pro-US means letting Iraq off the hook, making a safe haven for Palistinians and decrying the US's "lack of consistancy" in our dealings with N. Korea and Iraq. I am not sure of his Bosnian stance, but it's suspect in by book these days.
Really, Bob's been carrying Daschle's water on the US policy in the ME. I don't find him worth the read anymore.

So you don't have any specific examples (with context provided of course) of "pro-Arab" sentiment on Novak's part?
To: Cacophonous
Kind of hard to find
specific examples for you, since I don't read his tripe any more.
Tell you what: Do your own homework.
This concludes this attempt to get through. Good bye.

I used to go and look up sources for folks, but it was such a thankless job that I won't do it any more.

In my opinion, Novak is devoted to an america first concept that means we should deal with any country that can help us, and that we should militarily intervene almost never. He is willing, to a fault, to make excuses for nondemocratic countries.
But I've watched him a lot and have never found him to be so anti Israel or anti semetic as this article makes out. I believe he is extremely anti Arafat, anti communist, anti Farakhan, etc. He's a tough guy and I enjoy hearing him take on the liberals. I therefore tune out his isolationist tendencies. That's my take on him.

I can live with that.
After the shooting stops, I plan on reading him again.

Since you don't read his tripe anymore, one would wonder how you know what he says...I bow to your omniscience.
To: Cacophonous
You should be bowing to me. Very good. It usually takes folks a dozen posts before they figure that out.
