I'd have to know what it would sound like if a computer were to just give random patterns of do, re, fa, and so.

It's shooting fish in a barrel. Regardless of which note is percieved as the tonic, you'll get some "new agey" melodies.

Jacob Obrecht obtained a melody from an existing melody by sorting the notes from longest to shortest and using that as a new melody. (The next version sorted from shortest to longest.) It doesn't lead to a bad melody if applied to "The Yellow Rose of Texas."
