There is nothing new about Canadians' anti-Americanism, of course. Historically, "not being American" is a cornerstone of our identity. Resenting Americans allows us to feel good about our inadequacies. This is true of all the people bashing us Americans.
They don't have what it takes to do things for theirselves.
So we do it for them and pay their way while we do it.

The article in National Review was not MEANT to be taken (too) seriously. But a large part of the Canadian identity is its anti-Americanism.
We have to do what we have to do, world opinion be damned. If no one stands with us other than the Brits and the Aussies that is their problem. Too many of the other countries accommodate history rather than making it.

"It is the fate of great powers that provide order to do so against the background of a world that takes the protection while it bemoans the heavy hand of the protector." This sums it all up.

....... Throughout the Middle East, modern ideas and practices are perceived as a threat to traditional ways of life...... Yet, they sure seem to love all the "modern technology". They want automobiles and televisions AND they sure seem to be very interested in "modern weaponry", the more destructive the better.
I find it interesting.
Just a thought.

Canadians are anti-American for the same reason that liberals are anti-American. A liberal looks across the street and sees his neighbors living a happy and prosperous life and is jealous because he isn't happy and often isn't prosperous. He can't see a way to raise himself to be happy and prosperous, so he looks for a way to destroy his neighbor's happiness and prosperity. Even Soviet soldiers descending on America would have pleased this liberal because then he would see his neighbors suffering as well. With Canada, we have the same situation played on a national level. I think that's what this guy is saying as well.

I read this this morning in the S-T and thought about posting it here. I see you have highlighted several points from the article and it makes me laugh because I couldn't decide which point was the most important--too many really good statements. I guess I was overwhelmed and gave up the posting idea! Glad you prevailed! Good post!

" Jean-Francois Revel, in his new book L'Obsession anti-americaine, and Philippe Roger, in his book L'Ennemi americain, argue that anti-Americanism is not necessarily connected to anything people fear the United States might do, but rather to their own inadequacies. The inability of Europe to repeat the economic success of the United States, the failure of European social policies, the fracturing of national identity in the face of immigration and a post-imperial malaise born of waning global influence have all engendered an inferiority complex among European intellectuals. For them, the economic and military supremacy of the United States is a discomfiting reproach to Europeans' presumed cultural superiority. " As we all thought, they hate us because they are jealous failures.
