Husband of missing Modesto woman lied about girlfriend, family says

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The husband of a missing pregnant woman may have lied about his relationship with a girlfriend and possibly other things, a spokeswoman for the family said Friday.

Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for relatives of Laci Peterson, 27, of Modesto, said police have shown the family recent photographs of Scott Peterson with a girlfriend. The husband had previously denied such a relationship, the family said.

"Now, however, they believe he has lied to them about this, and possibly other things as well," Petersen said.

"Approximately two weeks ago, Ron Grantski, Laci's stepfather, asked Scott if he had a girlfriend. Scott told him no and Ron believed him," Petersen said.

"The family is asking him to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department," Petersen said. "Their family is the most important thing to them and if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."

Laci Peterson was reported missing on Christmas Eve. She is due to deliver a baby boy on Feb. 10. Her husband told investigators he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve morning.

Police did not indicate to the family if investigators believed Scott Peterson was responsible for his wife's disappearance, according to Petersen.

"The family knows that the police are doing their job," Petersen said. "They don't want to do anything that can hurt their chances of finding Laci."

Petersen, executive director of the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, which is sponsoring a reward for Laci Peterson's safe return, said the Modesto center closed Thursday.

Volunteers also canceled plans to open a one-day center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"Although Laci has not been located yet, our search effort will not stop," said Brad Saltzman, general manager of the Red Lion Hotel in Modesto, who had been organizing the volunteer centers. "We will continue to search for Laci and her baby boy."

Police have repeatedly said Scott Peterson is not a suspect but has been less than cooperative.

Caught that. Fuhrman sounds like he is getting up to speed on the case.

That would be great! Fuhrman is a very good detective. I don't care what Johnnie Cochran says. LA lost a great detective, IMO. Fuhrman has proven himself many times over. Johnnie Cochran is still a dirt bag who helped turn a killer loose.

Fuhrman is so impressive. Yes, they lost a great detective, at least now he can spread his expertise around further than just LA.

Did the Berkeley gf buy the marina parking ticket? Hmmm, makes you wonder.

I don't think the girlfriend was in on this, because, as an accessory to murder, she'd have spilled specific beans by now.

Maybe Furhman will write a book. I didn't read his book about the Martha Moxley case, but the book was instrumental in re-opening the investigation and arresting that Skakel guy.

That case was especially sad because even with the make and licence plate # of the car known plus the fact that the Wal-Mart parking lot camera had captured the carjacking. It was almost impossible to motivate the local PD

It was so frustrating seeing how hard it was for people to get the police to do anything.

It was so obvious because it was the weekend they weren't going to get into it until their weekend was over.

I don't think they have ever found her and if I remember right there was also another women missing in this case.

And the best part is, since it was some formal affair, seems it would be easier to track down the attendees--unlike the situation with a less formal party.

Of course, I'm forgetting something (as usual.) The person who gave them the picture would know where it was, when it was, and who SHE was!

Wonder how many officers it's taking to keep Scott's girlfriends under watch.

You were right, I think, when you pegged this type of adulterer as the type who wants what he wants when he wants it--and to him, probably the other women are all just one big blur.

A friend of mine was married to that type of guy. Theirs was an extremely acrimonious divorce. A lot of money was involved. I got the impression that the "stuff" was more important than anything. (Thank God there were no children.) I think empty people--such as this friend's husband was--tend to cling to their "stuff" because they are incapable of clinging to any particular human being.
No one got murdered, though. These people, for all their faults, are not that screwed up!

If a guy is more attached to material things than to people, then to him, divorce is the worst possible alternative. For heaven's sake--"she might get my stuff!!!!"

If the case really gets stalled, I think there is a possibility he would write a book. Otherwise he is just a commentator on the police activities and I don't think that will sell books. I'm still hoping he gets off that missing 50 minutes thing, it's a missing 15 hrs. (pet peeve alert).

I don't belive she has ever been found...

I don't thank she has been found either, the Modesto PD has had some HIGH profile cases their, and they are getting better with each case.

Hi Queen Jadis! Looks like Scott Peterson (as far as I can tell) is going to be at the Doubletree Inn in Westwood morning "looking for Laci". We oughta go down there and take a photo of the perp. :)

BTW, has anyone ever said why they are searching in LA?

They wanted to keep the name and face out there. Won't be searching, just putting up flyers. No police investigation is headed to LA.
