Husband of missing Modesto woman lied about girlfriend, family says

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The husband of a missing pregnant woman may have lied about his relationship with a girlfriend and possibly other things, a spokeswoman for the family said Friday.

Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for relatives of Laci Peterson, 27, of Modesto, said police have shown the family recent photographs of Scott Peterson with a girlfriend. The husband had previously denied such a relationship, the family said.

"Now, however, they believe he has lied to them about this, and possibly other things as well," Petersen said.

"Approximately two weeks ago, Ron Grantski, Laci's stepfather, asked Scott if he had a girlfriend. Scott told him no and Ron believed him," Petersen said.

"The family is asking him to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department," Petersen said. "Their family is the most important thing to them and if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."

Laci Peterson was reported missing on Christmas Eve. She is due to deliver a baby boy on Feb. 10. Her husband told investigators he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve morning.

Police did not indicate to the family if investigators believed Scott Peterson was responsible for his wife's disappearance, according to Petersen.

"The family knows that the police are doing their job," Petersen said. "They don't want to do anything that can hurt their chances of finding Laci."

Petersen, executive director of the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, which is sponsoring a reward for Laci Peterson's safe return, said the Modesto center closed Thursday.

Volunteers also canceled plans to open a one-day center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"Although Laci has not been located yet, our search effort will not stop," said Brad Saltzman, general manager of the Red Lion Hotel in Modesto, who had been organizing the volunteer centers. "We will continue to search for Laci and her baby boy."

Police have repeatedly said Scott Peterson is not a suspect but has been less than cooperative.

Poor people

Very much deluded by a certain someone who could look the father or f-i-l in the eye and answer "No" so firmly that it was believable, when he was asked if he was having an affair.

If I were in the position of the Rocha family (God forbid), I think I would hire a private investigator. As good as the police are, I still would want the additional input that might come from that.

No, no, I can't take credit for finding that post! Someone else did, and it was getting lost on that long thread, so I reposted it--I just don't remember now who found it originally.

The witness that saw YOU driving her lifeless body toward south of Modesto, with your boat hitched on back.

And isn't this an interesting quote from that post? I hadn't heard anything about this witness. Anyone else? Is this something an insider knows to be fact, or is this speculation? There must be so many rumors flying around that town.

I wonder what they meant by his "country club life"? It sounds as if they KNOW him all too well. He must NOT have been that "wonderful husband" that everyone was talking about in the beginning. Just think about what Laci was probably putting up with IN SILENCE!

That's the one line that leapt out at me. Either this person knows a whole lot more than we do OR they are trying to make Scott think that they do.

I remember reading that a witness told the police he/she saw Scott's truck and boat on Dec 24. The witness remembered because he/she thought it strange to fish on Christmas Eve day. I can't remember what thread it was on but it was at FR within the last 2 days, I think.

AP:

quote:

"I don't think Scott has any support left, not from people I interact with" said neighbor Kim McGregor, 30. "It appears he's on his own." McGregor, who has been feeding the dog, said Scott has seldom been at the modest 1949 Covena Avenue house he shared with his wife for the past two years.
Just what I suspected he wasn't at home very often. If I recall one of Laci's friends was talking on LK Live and mentioned seeing Scott alone skiing at a resort on a weekday. His explaination was that he was practicing before he used a ski pass that Laci had given him for a present. The friend used the incident as an example of Scott's perfectionism. It struck me at the time that Scott was a man who was probably leading a double life. I bet that Laci didn't know he was skiing on that workday.Typical of this type of guy -all smoke and mirrors.

I have an insurance license. As has been stated here, the term double indemnity, as usually used, provides a double death benefit in case of accidental death.

I had a client who choked to death on chewing tobacco and his wife collected the double death benefit because the death was considered accidental.

Cal Poly is a small school and SLO is a small town...

Well, I had to go check figures to see. So in 2000, the population of SLO was about 44,000, and the student population was expected to be 15,000 full time students around that time (student population figures found at link). And the figures would have been somewhat smaller back in the mid-90s.

So a few hundred people were on a list of people who knew the missing student, out of, what? 11 thousand or so students or maybe 30-something thousand town population?

I'm STILL not clear that if she was murdered, is that considered "accidental death"? I guess a case could be made that because it wasn't expected, it was, so to speak "accidental", thus, "unexpected". I don't know?

Actually, wouldn't a young mother (or father) be more likely to die from an automobile or other accident than any other reason?

Statistically speaking, it seems like it would make sense for young parents who are buying the insurance to provide for their children in case something happens to one or the other of them to get a double indemnity policy.
