However, the men out around the perimeter of the airfield for security were often placed in that position.
Wolves there were super-sized and very hungry and aggressive, with slim pickings for din-din.
Have to laugh at the stupidity of some military minds, though.
On one occasion an airman brought in the wolf who'd attacked him, and a green lieutenant actually tried to make him pay for the bullets he'd expended!!

By the way, when we drove the Alaska Highway in the dead of winter to move to Fairbanks, we stopped at a remote outpost filling station in the Yukon Territory of Canada. The owner was most hospitable and asked if the boys (then 7 & 8) wanted to see a wolf he had shot the day before.
In the garage, he had tied a rope around the hind legs and tied the other end of the rope to a very high rafter. We stared at it, open-mouthed.
I kid you not - it was the size of a small pony, its nose nearly touching the floor!!
Made our German shepherd look like a kid's stuffed toy.
They grow everything big up there! .45MAN has told me stories about the mosquitoes the size of helicopter! LOL!
OK, so I exaggerate a little....but he said they were huge. Also *stawberries* each one the size of a meal! :-)
