I received this tonight from my bestest buddy on the USS Constellation and he asked me to post it here for him. He said he wrote this to help people who don't know what it's like to be in the military have a better understanding. I think it's beautiful. So this is from my bestest buddy, David, for the enjoyment of all who come to the Canteen in support of our military, past and present.

THE DAY OF THE SAILOR

Awakening to the sound of a whistle being blown
He slips from sleeping to moving like a drone,
Showering and dressing for another day of work
He says 'what's up with a bit of a quirk;
Heading to the mess decks to get a bite of grub
His first mornings' cup of Java makes him alert with a jump,
Ready to take on another workday at sea
Knowing soon enough one day soon home he will be;
Helping his customers throughout his busy day
Wanting to be anywhere around but away,
Finishing his workday and moving to his studies
To welcome the night playing cards with his buddies;
The hours slip by as drowsiness draws near
Having prepared for the worse he has nothing to fear,
The Navy's taught him how to live
How to work, eat and sleep,
And how to move steadily about
Without even a slight peep;
Having learned how to prepare against chemical attacks
And how to save himself in biological and radiological attacks,
His brain holds information that most people only wish for
So at the end of the night he can head for the door;
Having shared his knowledge with whom he lives
The gift of lifesaving is his most precious gift,
Heading to bed at the end of the long night
He knows in his sleep the others will keep things right;
He does it for freedom and to see faraway lands exotic
He knows there's nothing more true than a heart that's patriotic.

Thank you radu for sharing THE DAY OF THE SAILOR with us!

I hope David can see it, but more importantly, I hope all reading it who don't have a clue about what being a Sailor is about will be enlightened!
