Yes, the North had slaves of their own and probably profited more on Southern slavery than did the South itself. Most commercial interests in the North didn't like the abolitionists or the anti-slavery proponents because they believed it interrupted the flow of commerce. Only after the Fugitive Slave Law and the Kansas-Nebraska Acts which nullified the Compromise of 1820 were passed in the 1850s did Northerners as a large group react. And when Pres. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, he only freed Southern slaves. The North was allowed to keep theirs.

Yeah, my great-great grandfather had 230 McDonalds franchises in Manhattan alone!

. . . he probably knew my great-great grandfather, who had the 1900 "automobile territory" for Greater New York . . .

Doesn't matter where the bad guys were in early NYC! Jesse is stirring up a marvelous contradiction! We all knew slavery wasn't just the bane of the Southern States. We all knew the Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to the Union States.

But most don't. And if Jesse wants to pin reparations on the current United States, then he will have to make the case based on slavery throughout the union. He will have to implicitly or explicitly support the argument that the War between the States was fought between two parties that supported slavery.

You go Jesse.

Dementia being a symptom of the middle to late stages of syphilus, I think the Reverend Jackson should go see a doctor really soon. This is way off the deep end stuff.

"They are only hurting their own race by saying their nonsense ..."

No,
This kind of (stuff) hurts us all, regardless of descriptive nouns.
It's devisive and intended to be so. Only solution is to dry up his/their funding but that would require some courage on the part of a public that has been frightened into submission for over a generation.

Russian serfdom was an entirely different animal than American slavery. Serfs are often mischaracterized as slaves, largely in an effort to create a falsely linear history of Russian oppression to "justify" 20th century communist abominations. Serfdom was instituted not as a means of creating cheap labour but as what amounted to the bottom tax bracket. Being virtually tax-exempt as the serfs were (unlike the peasants or sans-culottes in France, or the poor anywhere else) simply required certain limitations on citizenship, such as patronage from a wealthy landlord.

While it is easy for an American with the benefit of hindsight to thumb his nose at such a system because it did not allow full liberty to every member of the nation, the fact remains that prior to WWI (which, incidentally, Russia became involved in as a result of treason on the part of the military rather than any warlike desires of the czar) Russia was an exceedingly good place to live, "a country where social mobility was greater than elsewhere, where titles had none of the nimbus they had in the West, where fortunes could be made overnight by intelligent and thrifty people regardless of their social background"(Erich von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, Leftism Revisited, pp130). Many people simply confuse the general hardships of the poor in the 19th century regardless of location for suffering specific to the institution of serfdom.

There were, in fact, many "urban" serfs practicing medicine, law, or engineering, after having received government subsidized higher education, and now choosing to remain serfs (despite the fact that their "freedom price" was well within their reach) to hang on to the ultimate tax loophole. Indeed, going as far back as Catherine II, Russian serfdom had a lot more in common with being an average citizen in the 18th century version of the modern European welfare state than with American or Brazilian slavery. Whether such a welfare state is an objectively good thing is a separate issue (and one that must be considered in the historical context); but there is little doubt that it is incomparably better than slavery.

MORE JESSE JACKOFF CRAP, TO WIT (OR IN HIS CASE HALF-WIT!):

I consider Alan Keyes, Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams possessed of three of the finest minds extant today. In case you don’t know them, all are black.

So far as I can tell, Keyes, Sowell and Williams oppose this idiotic call for reparations.

Those who are NOT descended from AMERICAN slaves need to sit down and shut up. Under even the most tortured, leftist, idiotic (redundant!) logic (oxymoron!), these people have no standing. And those who ARE descendants of slaves now calling for reparations need to remember a few things:

They should not only be glad to be in America, they should be glad to be ON THE PLANET! Had their forebears NOT been sold to the slave traders, the blood of their ancestors would have run into the earth over there several centuries ago. Their ancestors would have been killed outright or worked to death by the OTHER black tribes who captured them in one of the interminable tribal wars still raging on that sad continent. These modern day would-be "plaintiffs" would not even exist.

JESSE'S "AFRICAN GRAVEYARD" IS -- IN AFRICA!

And should the great-great-great grandchildren of the approximately 3,000 SLAVE OWNING BLACK plantation owners in this country also be subject to PAYING reparations?

If so, how do we find THEM?

Robert Hitt Neill tells of attending a Tennessee Mountain Writer’s Conference years ago with several other authors. Among them was Alex Hailey, celebrated author of “Roots.” Watching a TV news show, a group of them watched a demonstration in a Southern state against the “Rebel” flag incorporated into that state’s flag. The very next report covered a famine in Africa. Graphic images showed dead bodies, starving children with distended tummies and runny noses and dying people covered with flies, too weak to brush them away.

Mr. Hailey intoned in a low, serious voice:
“Every time an American black sees a story like that, they should find a Confederate flag and kiss it.” He then pointed to the TV screen and continued, “Because these would be me and my descendants, except for American slavery. I thank God that my family and I are here instead of there.”

What about the millions STILL living in slavery, held there by members of THEIR OWN RACE in Africa and elsewhere today?

Do you suppose THEY are NOT targets of these reparations whores because they have little or nothing of value for which they can be EXTORTED?

And how about the MILLIONS of WHITES and ASIANS who have slavery in their backgrounds?

Next problem!

The reason for the reparations game is quite simple. The law has assured minorities equal access to schools and jobs, in many cases more than equal access. The legitimate complaints of the minorties have been addressed. The racial pimps (such as Jackson etal) derive their power from racial division and angst. Since the legitimate concerns have been addressed they have to invent new grievences to retain their power and money.

Jesse Jackson, in a speech on Wednesday, declared that New York's financial district was built on an "African burial ground" and achieved prosperity "on the backs of African people."

The only "backs of African people" Jesse knows about are those belonging to the women with whom he has fathered children.

More pertinent to our discussion, will this affect slavery reparations that is increasingly in demand?

A reparations suit will never work in court. All sorts of things will block a civil suit for reparations: statute of limitations, no plaintiff having suffered an actual injury, just for starters.

But that won't necessarily stop businesses from agreeing to pay up to avoid the bad publicity, or governments agreeing to pay for political reasons. It turns out the internment of the Japanese in World War Two was for good reason -- intelligence that could not be revealed indicated that the Japanese had already used Japanese in America for espionage, and had plans to use them for sabotage as well -- but that didn't stop the Congress from passing -- and President Reagan from signing -- reparations for that internment.

"In 1840, there was more Africans enslaved in New York than there was in Charleston South Carolina," he said. "So if we didn't know all our history, then the conclusion [that blacks deserve reparations] might seem unfair."

Jackass Jackson is a bad as those Rebel-Flag waving neo-confederates he says he hates. They both just make up stuff up with no regards to the facts.

For anyone interest in historical accuracy, go to the University of Virginia Historical census site at http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/cgi-local/censusbin/census/cen.pl?year=840 and check out what the real figures are. For the year 1840, here are the total number of slaves in the state of New York and the state of South Carolina.

NEW YORK -- 4 (likely with their masters visiting from the south when the census was taken. New York had ended slavery 40 years eariler, before there was a stock market on Wall Street.)

SOUTH CAROLINA --- 327,038

I'm not sure which county Charleston is in, but you can break the census records all the way down to the county level, but in 1840, there were as many slaves in South Carolina as there were whites.
