Archeologist Vendyl Jones (The Real 'Indiana Jones') -- Presents 'Meet the Gorgons'
Vendyl Jones is one of the world's foremost archeologists. He is said to be the model for the character "Indiana Jones." His web site linked here for those who are interested. He will be a guest tonight for a three hour interview on 'Coast to Coast AM' beginning at 11:00 PM Pacific Time
Meet the Gorgons
Tonight's guest Vendyl Jones and his Institute have been involved in archaeological excavations in the state of Israel. Recently, evidence has surfaced that there was once a Greek temple in the city of Dor, which is on Israel's Mediterranean coast. The area, which has been home to eight civilizations dating back 3,000 years, may have had a Greek presence around the seventh century BCE.
The latest Biblical Archaeology Review analyzed the finds from a dig there. "Especially tantalizing was
a huge clay mask, much larger than an ordinary human face. All that was preserved however, was a gigantic eye, with an eyebrow and part of the forehead," wrote Ephraim Stern. Eventually other pieces were located and found to form the heads of two Gorgons.
Gorgons are well known in Greek mythology (most famously Medusa) and have typically been depicted as monstrous beings with snakes for hair, fang-like teeth, and their tongues sticking out. In Greek culture representations of the Gorgon on shields, walls and gates became popular as a protective agent especially against "bewitchment." Because it was determined that one of the Gorgon heads from the Dor excavation was part of a roof tile this lent credence to the idea that there had once been a Greek temple at the site.

I've been following this guy for years. He's good. And half the fun of reading his finds is the site reports from the trips. The political intrigue sometimes is as suspensful as a good detective show. LOL. The Israeli dept of antiquities plays a lot of games regarding licensing for Archeological digs because of the threat posed by the Palestinians among other things.

This guy has impressive credentials. Check his web site for his biography .... Maybe he uses 'CE' because he is a Christian scholar who is also an expert other religions and other languages and studied the Talmud Torah .... Maybe you ought to email him your questions. What do I know about it ... I don't know from 'nutthin' ...

I have known Vendyl Jones for years. He is a fascinating individual.
Is he the inspiration for Indiana Jones? Good question. Only Vendyl says so. It's somewhat of a joke. No corobaration by Spielberg or anyone else. If you ask Vendyl he will laugh and says it's too much of a coincidence...
Vendyl's religious values today are also rather vague. He was a Baptist Preacher here in Texas. He married a Jewish woman. When asked if Jesus is the Messiah he says he doesn't think so. He may, very well be, a practicing Jew. The one thing I do know is he is a wonderful man. A powerful speaker. A great guest and a scholar and seeker of the truth.

He is one of my personal hero's, next to my hubby. He has faced a few road blocks because some of the things he finds, or wants to find, enrages the Arab world, so Israel can be pretty uncooperative now and then. Thanks for the heads up. I don't know if he still digs, he's getting on up there in years, but that only makes him more facinating to me.
To: ex-Texan; Thinkin' Gal
Thanks for the heads up, ex-Texan. I'll try and last a couple more hours to listen in.
Digging up ancient stuff is a good way to pass time. Plus, ya never know what is in the next pile of dirt and debris.
Thinkin Gal, Nice pics . Thanks

One of three monsters in Greek mythology, the most famous of which was Medusa. According to Hesiod, the three Gorgons were daughters of the sea god Phorcys. Another tradition held that they were created by the earth goddess, Gaea, to aid her sons, the Titans, in their struggle with the gods. Classical art depicts them as winged females with snakes for hair.
Great Movie too!
