One step farther on this. They should totally remove from college/university applications the words "race" and "gender" Isn't it illegal to ask these questions on a job application? What's the difference? You shouldn't be able to have it both ways. :)

I assumed as much. I would assume he made this decision because he feels it's the right thing to do.

If that Lott example was correct, according to the "pundits," Bush wouldn't even have taken a stand one way or the other because "everybody" said he could never do this now because he had to "prove" that the GOP isn't a racist group.

I sure that this will unleash torrents of bellicose remarks about how racist the Republicans are.

Let's see, what is the issue. Admit people that are qualified by their abilities instead of their heritage. How novel.

Blacks don't come to the the university with lower qualifications because they were discriminated against, but rather because they didn't prepare themslves in K-12

The problem is the quality of the schools, and not necessarily the quality of the students. I remember some years ago, when the Black Valedictorians at two of DC's high schools thought they had good shots at scholarships. They had worked hard during their school years and had perfect attendance. But it turned out that they were practically illiterate.

Instead of fixing the problem with K-12, we started admitting these kids on quota systems. Of course, most of them either get through on courses in "Relevance of Hip-Hop" or drop out altogether.

Bush wants to fix the quality of K-12, and the testing is already having an effect. When he gets vouchers (and he will. He doesn't quit easily) the need for quotas will be gone.

Meantime, I do agree with what has been done in FL, CA and TX to guarantee these kids who worked that hard a shot at someplace in the state University system. Just not necessarily a slot in the top tiered schools.

Yep! Suicide is your only option. Try not to leave your pathetic body where someone might trip over it.

I'm sure it was speculation, but was stated as fact. They said Trent Lott had to go because of his prejudices.

They said Trent Lott had to go because of his prejudices.

Well, that, I agree with.

But I don't believe George Bush did this today because of what Trent Lott did; nor do I believe Bush didn't back Lott because it would have jeopardized this brief.

Look, I am not on here more than 2 times a day and already I am tired of this Jesse Jackson spat.

Get over it - surely you can find something else to talk about if you want to post 24/7. If not, why not go watch TV and maybe you will find something else to talk about.

We do not care whether or not Howlin supports Jesse Jackson. She doesn't but I don't care one way or the other and I am tired of seeing it. I feel sure many others are too.

So, tomorrow my administration will file a brief with the court arguing that the University of Michigan's admissions policies, which award students a significant number of extra points based solely on their race, and establishes numerical targets for incoming minority students, are unconstitutional.

Good news, thanks Meek.
