Dear Mr. President,

I have followed, with some distress, accounts in the press that your administration may not oppose, in the U.S. Supreme Court, grossly preferential treatment by the University of Michigan on the basis of race and sex.

As President of the Declaration Foundation, and as a former vice-chair of California's Proposition 209, I beg you to take a stand. Your party, the people of California, and the founding principles of this Republic all call for equal treatment under the law. There is no subtlety, no fine print, no room for political compromise based on electoral calculations here. All human beings are created equal. That is final. All are entitled to equal treatment under law. That is final. And not only final, but, for Americans, foundational.

Please, Mr. President, respect the pledges of your party, of your campaign, of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and of the Declaration. Respect the honored dead of Gettysburg and Antietam. Have a care for the memory of Lincoln, the founder of your party. Direct the Solicitor General to act for justice, and against race-consciousness and disunity. Stand up for simple equality, and earn a place in history as the president who finally made good on Justice John Marshall Harlan's golden words, "Our Constitution is color-blind."

Sincerely yours,
Dr. Richard Ferrier
President, Declaration Foundation

""The absurdity is that diversity has become the goal, and nothing is allowed to stand in its way.""

Just as the meanings of other words (such as 'gay' or 'choice' )have changed, the meaning of 'diverse' now means 'preferred minority.'

And that is pure luck. With our borders unprotected it would be very easy to just walk across the border and launch an attack

Luck, guardian angel, more vigilance - take your pick. If you want to believe it is just luck, fine. You seem to want to argue against anything positive. Go ahead - there are plenty of other people around who would love nothing more than to aruge with you, but it won't be me.

The President did what he did, and said what he said based on his own core values.

He believes what he said today, and that is why he said that.

Do you really believe that this was someone else's position? That he just listened to the right advisor? For what purpose would he do such a bold thing if was not a deeply held principle?

Your comment made no sense to me either.

Where does George W. Bush stand on affirmative action?

Campaign For a Colorblind America

The Campaign For a Colorblind America (www.equalrights.com) asked George W. Bush to answer the following questions:

Congress should enact a law that would ban discrimination and preferences on the basis of race, color, sex, ethnicity and national origin in the operation of public employment and public contracting.

Agree_____ Disagree_____ No Opinion_____

Race-based "affirmative action" should be replaced with class- or need-based affirmative action or a system based on merit only.

Agree_____ Disagree_____ No Opinion_____

No recent immigrant of any race should benefit from "affirmative action" or racial preferences because they have not faced a history of discrimination in the United States.

Agree_____ Disagree_____ No Opinion_____

In his answer, to each of these questions, Gov. George W. Bush checked "No Opinion."

Also, Gov. Bush did not take a position on Measure A, better known as the Houston Civil Rights Initiative, which would have outlawed race and gender preferences in contracting in Houston.

I am confident that President Bush has done all he can to protect this country. I also know that he is only one man, and that there MANY career government employees who would be happy to sabotage him.

If there is another attack, I will blame the "intelligence" agencies. If there is one area where I am disappointed in him, it's in the fact that heads haven't rolled at the fbi, etc.

He did the right thing because of the kind of man he is.

Exactly.

...and Pat Buchanan is saying Bush did this to pander to his base.

Bush has the base in his pocket. He keeps his base just by being who he is. Buchanan, having never had a base, does'nt know what he's talking about. Chris Matthews said the same crap about his "base", and Press pipes in with the Nixon Southern Strategy crap. Grrrooowwwwllllllll!

I do remember the people who put it on the line every day. I also know that quite a few of them (the border patrol) need much more support than they are getting.

Why won't someone answer my question? "Why won't GWB do more to protect our borders?"

These threads are becoming parody!

Karsus doesn't like the prez because W doesn't do exactly what he wants him to do 100% of the time on 100% of the issues. (Perhaps he'll find that perfect candidate someday...and perhaps his candidate will win. And perhaps I'll spread my wing and fly!) Then TLB comes along and says the president is doing the right things because he has no mind of his own, just takes orders from the rank and file R's. Who's the bigger puppet?

It all makes for a good laugh!

FOR THE LOVE OF GAWD, STOP CUTTING AND PASTING THAT CRAP. WE"RE SICK OF IT.

I would REALLY appreciate it if EVERYONE OF YOU who is sick of Todd's spamming would PING him on this thread and tell him.

As an added note, you've obviously mistaken me and a lot of others with some people who CARE what Richard Ferrier thinks.

the meaning of 'diverse' now means 'preferred minority.'

You're absolutely correct. In CA, for example, Asians are not minorities insofar as "diversity" is concerned.

Why, because I wish our president to be more vocal as to what he believes? What is wrong with that?

What is wrong is that the Presidnet doesn't have to be out in front on EVERY issue as soon as it is raised. Don't you remember how x42 used to do that? It was always about HIM, and he would make sure everyone knew it.

President Bush knows that there are things more important in this country than his personal opinion on every single subject. He has come out and spoken when it is his function as a Preaident to do so. He knows when to speak out AND when to keep his own counsel!

Well, it would be naive to think that he is operating in a political vacuum.

The President is right on this one...that's what counts. And he is demonstrating true leadership that is in accordance with the most far-seeing and principled forces within his party.
