LACI PETERSON UPDATE- 1-14-03
Fox News- On The Record | 1-14-03 | Greta Van Sustern

Posted on 01/15/2003 1:12:22 AM PST by DWar

Van Sustren interviewed 20 year Berkley Bay fisherman Craig Stone. Stone said that nothing about what Scott Peterson did on the fishing trip to Berkley Bay seemed out of the ordinary to him from a fishing viewpoint. The bait was appropriate and available. The sturgeon were available. The boat size was not unusual. The optimal fishing area was not far off shore. The fish are prized but not easily caught. The time of day peterson was fishing was appropriate. It all seemed plausable to him.

My heart has been breaking all day from another thread about a woman missing since before Thanksgiving...

Are you talking about Alice? That was just so awful. BTW, Gloria Gomez from 13 news got that weird quote from SP in his front yard. Although she was standing in front of him away from the camera you can see him SMILING the whole time.

Yes, it's still there, on the "January 3, 2003 Page 12" in the archives.

Re: 292---Is that the boat? How the heck was he going to put a 4 or 5 foot sturgeon in that boat, much less try to fight one on the line?

No body found in marina
SUSPICIOUS OBJECT IN WATER IDENTIFIED AS ANCHOR; SEARCH FOR MISSING WOMAN CONTINUES NEAR MODESTO

Mercury News

A large object in the waters off the Berkeley Marina that some feared might be the body of missing Modesto woman Laci Peterson turned out to be a boat anchor lodged in the floor of San Francisco Bay.

Divers suspended their search of the area near a long, abandoned pier about 3 p.m. Saturday, saying they found nothing of interest under the water.

Police will now focus their search efforts for the pregnant woman in the Central Valley, where the 27-year-old Peterson disappeared Christmas Eve.

``Berkeley is not the only place where we're searching,'' said Modesto police spokesman Doug Ridenour. ``We've been searching all the counties that adjoin ours.''

Volunteers at a search center in Modesto erupted in cheers when they heard that the underwater object -- first detected Wednesday night -- was not Peterson.

``Oh, I'm just elated. Whew,'' said Terri Western, whose daughter has been Peterson's friend since they were in the third grade. ``We never stopped going on with things, but in all honesty, you pause for a moment. But I am relieved. I'd be lying if I didn't say that.''

Scott Peterson told police that he last saw his wife the morning of Dec. 24 as he left for a solo fishing trip to Brooks Island, northwest of the Berkeley Marina.

Police have not characterized the 30-year-old Peterson as a suspect, but say he has not been ruled out, either.

Authorities began searching the bay about a week ago and heightened their interest when sonar detected the object about 25 feet below the surface. But rough seas kept divers from reaching the object for days.

Volunteer divers from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department returned to the scene Saturday morning. Divers scoured an 18,500-square-foot area for about 3 1/2 hours. About 100 people from at least seven state and local agencies participated in the search.

While searchers combed the ocean floor, a throng of print, radio and television reporters from around the country -- including Geraldo Rivera -- waited on shore with bystanders, some of them using binoculars to get a better look.

Berkeley resident Frank Pearce and his friend Mike Williams were drawn to the pier out of curiosity.

``We've been following the case pretty close,'' said Pearce, 55. ``We came out to see what they would find.''

Peterson, due to give birth in early February, was to attend a baby shower Saturday. Instead, a group of nine women held a slumber party Friday night to toast their missing friend and talk about old times.

``With everything going on, we just needed to get together and catch up,'' said Kim McNeely, a friend of Laci Peterson's since junior high school. ``All of this is unthinkable.''

A few tired volunteers at the Modesto search center called it a day after learning of the anchor discovery, but most stayed to hand out more missing-person fliers.

``We can't run out now. She is still out there,'' said volunteer Judi McKinney.

Early Saturday, before the anchor was identified, volunteers tried to carry on the search effort in Modesto as normal.

Scott Peterson was one of the first to arrive at the center, though he stayed for only a few minutes. He was followed by four Beyer High School students, who grabbed a stack of fliers to post around their neighborhoods, and Krista Hamilton, who had driven to the San Joaquin Valley town from her home in San Jose.

``They're both wonderful people and a lot of fun,'' said Hamilton, who worked for the Petersons when they owned the Shack, a burger and beer joint in San Luis Obispo.

The phone call about the anchor came into the search center from Laci Peterson's mother at 1:25 p.m., as volunteers were putting together buttons and ribbons.

``We just knew it wasn't going to be her,'' said Susan Caudillo, Scott Peterson's sister.

Caudillo said she understands police have to check her brother's alibi, but thinks too much of their attention, and the media's, has been focused on him.

``We can't really tell people what to think,'' Caudillo said. ``We know Scott, and if you knew him, you wouldn't be thinking that way. . . . I'm hoping they're happy with their search efforts so they can get on with the other parts of the investigation.''

I think if I had been a really close friend or relative of Laci's, I couldn't bear to read things like these threads on the net--at least, not while the search for her was still going on. I would want to try to find a refuge from searching, and thinking about this catastrophe all the time.

But if I were someone who knew her, but from more of a distance, I think I'd read them all, as often as possible. So I am thinking that Krista Hamilton might read the speculation about her here and elsewhere, and maybe make another statement to a reporter. She's already talked to the press briefly. Said she used to work for the Petersons at their restaurant.

His sister, I think her name is Denise Caudillo, seems to smile a lot, too. Or maybe it's just my imagination.

Oddly, in the picture of Scott at the candlelight vigil (he is shown holding his little niece), he is smiling.

I am not saying that smiling makes anyone guilty of anything.

Another mention of Krista Hamilton...

BayArea.Com

Snip

...Earlier in the day, Krista Hamilton canvassed the Modesto neighborhood, leaving fliers on doorsteps and taping them to posts. Hamilton said she once worked at a restaurant the Petersons operated in San Luis Obispo and hadn't seen them since they moved north two years ago.

"I think my intentions are pretty selfish -- if I do something I'll feel better," Hamilton said. "It's easier to do something than sit and worry about it."

That's pretty incriminating to me.

Why would Krista be so concerned if she wasn't still tied to Scott somehow? Not ready to buy the notion that this particular former employee just coincidentally happens to be more concerned than any other.

Both Krista and Scott were in on it.

Your thoughts are exactly what we have wondered since we learned she was 81/2 months pregnant. Someone abducting Laci and waiting for the birth of the baby. We hope not.

Posted this on another thread:

Just watched the news on KOVR 13 - Sacramento CBS affiliate serving the Modesto/Sacramento area.

One of their reporterettes spoke with Scott Peterson when he issued the above statement. His statement was in text form only - nothing on-camera.

KOVR reports that the Volunteer center was closed at some point today and it is unknown at this time if it will re-open tomorrow. Volunteers were stunned to hear the news of the affair.

It was reported that Modesto Police notified the family members of affair.

From Modesto, this is DD reporting. We now return you to our regularly scheduled program.
