Illinois school bans "safe zones"

Members of the Rich Township High School school board in suburban Chicago voted 5-1 Monday to remove multicolor triangles signifying safe zones for gay and lesbian students from more than 100 classroom doors, the Chicago Tribune reports. The vote came after some parents accused the district, which includes schools in Olympia Fields, Richton Park, and Park Forest, of promoting homosexuality and discriminating against nongay students by allowing the triangles. The triangles signify that teachers in designated classrooms are comfortable talking about gay and lesbian issues.

The vote was a blow to many students, according to David Claudon, a language arts teacher who is a sponsor of a gay-straight alliance. "They are very disappointed," he said. "I think one of the things to work through for a few kids is, Does this mean the support is no longer there?"

Hmmm. Just one of those random thoughts here... If a school calls it a "safe zone" for gays and they hang up a symbol for it to be recognized as such and a bunch of jocks (or whatever) went in the safe zone and beat up a gay kid- couldn't the gay kid sue the school for not making the safe zone safe? It seems like there might be some legal pitfalls in all this for the schools.

That 10% gay figure is false. It was promoted by Kinsey who used a large sample of prisoners in his research. More accurate estimates ussually indicate that between 1 and 3% of the population is gay, but that can vary quite a bit depending on the definition of gay. If you have a very narrow definition of gay, (someone who only has homosexual sex), then you get a very small percentage of the population, (about 1%). If you have a broader definition that number starts to get larger, but the 10% figure is pure BS.

Yeah, I hate to see gay people knowing who to talk to about their concerns.

Only their parents need to know that they are homosexuals. Their parents are the people they need to talk to anyway, not potential recruiters.

There is a good reason teenage homosexuals commit suicide at a much higher rate than other teens: people treat them like human waste.

If they opening flaunt their "sex life" with the world, then they should expect to be treated differently. Simply because you like to boink folks of the same sex, pigs or children you cannot expect society to congratulate or even understand you.

As to the suicide issue. Whether it is guilt or weakness, either way it is their choice. If it is ok for a mother to kill her own baby why can't these "people" kill themselves?

They started an organization named "Queer Nation" and started the chant, "We're queer and in your face". By virtue of these two things and possibly others they have made the word "queer" an acceptable part of the english lexicon.

As to faggot, I don't know but if it bothers them maybe they need to straighten up.

What happened to kids being kids? I am sick to death of the non-bullie BS that is going on in education today. Kids go to school to recieve an education, not to be sensitized to the plight of the teenage homosexual. Let boys be boys or preatty soon we will not have men. Teasing is part of growing up, I say let the kids deal with it unless it is violent, then let the teacher step in. What are they going to do when they grow up and dont have "safe zones " to run to? Im not advocating the torture of kids that are homosexual, or fat, or slow, or mentally handicapped, I am just asking for a common sense answer to the problem, instead of the current rash of "no tolerance" hate crime rules that abound today.

A safe zone is where (A) your sexual orientation (preferences, whatever) are no one else's business, and (B) everyone is expected to remember (A), and (C) there are consequences for forgetting (A). Don't look for this from the educRATs anytime soon.

Welcome to FR and good luck in your studies.

I see your point regarding the way gays are treated "like human waste" being partially responsible for the high suicide rate.

However, the fact that a school district "stood up" to the groups promoting this *over* awareness of sexual orientation is a step in bringing back some balance to a subject that just does not belong in the classrooms. The non-gay population is made to feel "like human waste" when it speaks up against the shove-it-down-your-throat-and-you-better-like-it homosexual crowd.

It is a small step by one school district to take back their autonomy against niche ideals or groups that have made it their business to legally force themselves and their principles.

And THAT is a conservative idea.
