The Peoples Republic of China recently startled the West when a JH-7 (Flying Panther) aircraft (Xian Aircraft Industry Company) fired a YJ-83 anti-ship cruise missile over Bohai Bay, demonstrating twice the range of which the weapon had been believed capable. This weapon is widely believed to be part of Beijing's efforts to develop a long-range strike capability against the US Navy and the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy.
According to sinodefense.com, the YJ-83 flies within 15 feet of the waters surface. It is equipped with a 365-pound warhead and a monopulse terminal guidance radar possessing high anti-jamming capabilities. It uses a semi-armor-piercing anti-personnel blast warhead, which relies on the missile's kinetic energy to pierce the deck of a ship, penetrate into and explode in the ship's interior.
Defense specialists say the YJ-83, sometimes called the C-803, also has the capability to receive target information in flight. Richard Fisher of the Jamestown Foundation was quoted as saying that the YJ-83 will probably be outfitted on the upgraded JH-7a fighter-bomber. A 155-mile range would put the launching aircraft outside of the range of Standard SM-2 missile that will be mounted aboard the ex-Kidd-class destroyers recently bought by Taiwan.

I certainly share your concern, in fact you could say that there are many things about the Chinese and their tactics that alarm me. However, their so called airforce consists of vietnam era 'fighter jets' and not one of their naval ships are up to standard with those compared to those in the US fleet. Not to mention that the 'fighter pilots' in the Chinese military do not log a 1/4 of flight training as compared to US fighter pilots. If there were ever a conflict with the Chinese and it involved air power, it would be nothing more than a skeet shoot for our US pilots.
As for the panama canal, that situation disturbs me a great deal but if you think about it...who is it closer to...the US or CHina? Do you know how fast and how many troops we could have there in a short time to take control of that zone? Dont forget, the US has an obligation to "protect" the Panama canal and we arent going to let it go when it serves our national interests.
Although many of their jets are vietnam era, they are acquiring or have already acquired the advanced Russian made Sukhoi SU-27 FLANKER series and the newly developed J-10 strike fighter. They are considered to be the largest military air force in the world with over 6,000 military airplanes and nearly one million active personnel.
THE NEW CHINESE ARMY AIR FORCE
Add the fact that it doesn't take a dogfight to launch air to surface anti-ship missles, and those 6000 warplanes becomes a staggering figure.

Apparently at least some of those Chinese pilots are US trained.

If the majority of them are in Iraq, Afghanastan, Bosnia, other such places, how many do you think will be left to defend the United States, let alone the Panama Canal?

I'd be more worried about incoming missiles from Panama and the Bahamas than any ground forces that may or may not be in Panama.

The Chinese basically got everything they wanted from us ....possibly more. The biggest coup for them was probably the nuclear warhead miniturization tech, which is extremely important if you want small effective nuke warheads.
Now the Chinese seem to be looking toward Moscow as their next step for stealing stuff. They have already started getting advanced cruise missiles (more advanced by the way than anything we have ...which is a shocker). However the biggest thing the Chinese are trying to get from Russia are plans for the new Topol-M Russian advanced ICBM! That would be a major prize for the Chinese since the Topol-M is meant to evade anti-ballistic missile defenses, and hence would be great for the Chinese who do not have thousands of warheads and thus have to ensure every warhead they have has a good chance of getting through US defenses.
Who knows, we may see US nuke warheads inside Russian ICBMs in the hands of the Chinese! And those missiles would be pointed at both Moscow and Washington!
Frankenstein comes alive in all his horrid glory!
And unless something is done China will be a potent threat 20 years from now once it becomes a legit superpower .....and chances are that it will achieve super-power status much sooner than that!
By the way why do you think Russia is arming the Indians with weapon systems that are top of the line? Even the US does not give Israel stuff as advanced as what the Russians are giving India! The reason is not Pakistan but essentially China. Russia knows that it needs all the allies it can get, and hence it is developing India into a buffer it can count on should China ever overstep its boundaries (although Russia is losing since some parts of Russia already have more Chinese in them than Russian citizens).
The US needs to wake up and see that although China is a big source for trade that it is also the biggest threat that will face the West in the future. Potentially the biggest threat in history even because for the first time we will have a nation that can attack us both militarily and economically.
ECM is Electronic Countermeasures. ECCM is Electronic Counter-Countermeasures. The former attempts to prevent enemies from utilizing the electromagnetic spectrum, the latter attempts to defeat enemy ECM.
There is no such thing as a guidance system immune to ECM. Please do not accept the manufacturers brochure as being a fair and impartial analysis of a weapons system...
