UNPLEASANT SURPRISE: Chinese Missile Has Double the Range Thought by West
NAVLog ^ | 2003 | K.B. Sherman

The Peoples Republic of China recently startled the West when a JH-7 (“Flying Panther”) aircraft (Xian Aircraft Industry Company) fired a YJ-83 anti-ship cruise missile over Bohai Bay, demonstrating twice the range of which the weapon had been believed capable. This weapon is widely believed to be part of Beijing's efforts to develop a long-range strike capability against the US Navy and the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy.

According to sinodefense.com, the YJ-83 flies within 15 feet of the water’s surface. It is equipped with a 365-pound warhead and a monopulse terminal guidance radar possessing high anti-jamming capabilities. It uses a semi-armor-piercing anti-personnel blast warhead, which relies on the missile's kinetic energy to pierce the deck of a ship, penetrate into and explode in the ship's interior.

Defense specialists say the YJ-83, sometimes called the C-803, also has the capability to receive target information in flight. Richard Fisher of the Jamestown Foundation was quoted as saying that the YJ-83 will probably be outfitted on the upgraded JH-7a fighter-bomber. A 155-mile range would put the launching aircraft outside of the range of Standard SM-2 missile that will be mounted aboard the ex-Kidd-class destroyers recently bought by Taiwan.

Are the Chinese planning to rent a navy from which they can use to fire these missiles? They Chinese do not have a NAVY, at least not in credible terms anyway and as for what they do have, well, lets just say it would be like a walk in the park. The Chinese may hold war games out the ass but what credible experience do they have against a real military that bites back? Hell, they have had theyre butts kicked by every foreign power that has ever felt like invading them. They may have one of the worlds largest standing militaries but all that means is that they are going to need one hell of a big graveyard to put them in. ( ooops, I forgot, the chinese dont bury their dead so I guess they are going to need a big ashtray.)

Phalanx is my lame retort.

It's not supersonic so...3000 rounds per minute should bring about this new superduper-missiles disengagement.

Maybe it's me, but shouldn't Clinton and his cronies swing from an oak tree for treason.

Silly you! - you've forgotten that you're living in Bizzarro World and that he's given a million bucks to show up late and give a speech.

May be a bit of strategery on Frist's part...get her to show her true colors in time of war...or force her to behave as if the eyes of all red-blooded Americans, i.e. voters are upon her.

No kidding. It's sometimes hard to find stuff that isn't made in the Peoples' Republic of China, but well worth the effort (to me, anyway). The Panama Canal, however, was given away by the Democrat Jimmy Carter. He has much to attone for; hammering Habitat for Humanity nails doesn't cut it.

How would the Chinese deal with US Nuclear Subs?
All the Sunburns in the world won't sink a Sub. I
would think that Sub launched cruise missiles
would bea real problem for the Chinese navy

It's reache the point that insisting on "Made in USA" is impossible. "Made in a Reasonably Friendly Country" will do as a second choice. For me, anyway. Example: just bought a good "outdoors" winter coat, from REI. Made in Philippines. Passed up a bunch of Chinese (PRC) stuff. They hardly have anything made in USA.
