Man Drowns Trying to Rescue Stray Dog
By Associated Press
A man drowned Saturday after he and his wife fell into a pond at a Mint Hill golf course when he tried to rescue a stray dog in the water, authorities said.
Charlotte Fire Department divers found Glen Doherty about 15 feet from the shore in the pond on the course in the Olde Sycamore community in Mint Hill, according to officials.
An emergency team tried to resuscitate Doherty as he was loaded into a helicopter and taken to Carolinas Medical Center. Doherty, 49, of Mint Hill, was later pronounced dead.
Mint Hill firefighters first to arrive at the scene at 11:22 a.m. found Doherty's wife, Barbara, clinging to a drainage pipe in the frigid water. The woman told firefighters that her husband had gone under, Mint Hill Fire Chief John Phillips said.
Barbara Doherty, 52, said she went into the pond to rescue her husband, who was not a good swimmer.
Phillips said the pond is sloped steeply on all four sides and lined with plastic.
"If you go in you're not going to crawl out of it," he said. "It would be like trying to climb up a wet sliding board."
Barbara Doherty was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte with symptoms of mild hypothermia and later released, authorities said.
Phillips said emergency workers don't stop trying to revive a cold-weather victim until they bring his core body temperature up.
Firefighters also pulled three dogs from the water, the stray and two dogs that belonged to the couple.

It's too bad he lost his life trying to save the dog. The world could use more kind-hearted individuals like this.

I agree. I also wonder if the couple's two dogs were in the water trying to save their master and the other dog?
Very sad story.

Guess he never figured out that if the ice wouldn't hold a dog, it surely would NOT hold a grown man...........

Agreed. Very sad. He won't wait long at heaven's gate.

Very sad. Maybe, after this tragedy, the golf course will put some type of temporary barrier around the ponds frozen in winter? RIP kind man.

I'd jump in a heartbeat to save my child or any child caught in that situation, but for a dog, cat or other animal, no way. Sorry if that sounds heartless, but I think the guy was nuts to risk his life for a pooch. I'm terribly sorry he paid the ultimate price for his folly.

The dog lived, the man died.
Darwin Award Nominee for sure.
Wife was at least trying to save her husband.

This man died in a heroic act of compassion, which is something you and some others here seem sadly incapable of appreciating.

The man died because he did not call the Fire Department in the first place.
One man's hero is another man's dumbass.

We have got to get back to some common sense in regard to how pets are viewed in our culture. This incessent anthropomorphism of animals has to stop. I can just imagine this hen pecked fellow being encouraged to jump into this man made pond after that mongrel.
A truly sad, and unfortunately preventable tale.

Have it your way. If and when you should fall into an icy pond, the bystanders should just call the Fire Department and take bets on whether they arrive before you drown. After all, they wouldn't want to be thought of as dumbasses, right?

Agreed. Also, his stupidity almost cost the life of his wife, who probably knew that the dog wasn't worth her life, but her husband's might be. At least he will have someone who will mourn him, and the couple's loved ones will not be attending a double funeral.
It's just a damn dog, people.

You're intitled to your opinion, but I'll stick with mine with no reservations. The man was nuts, and I'm sorry he lost his life for a dog...what a waste.

To each his own. I would have done the same thing.

I don't think anyone would question this man's actions and death had he attempted to rescue a HUMAN. But a dog? I think not.

Well, the golf course and property is public more so than someone's home and land. When you invite people on your property, you still have a resposibility to maintain the area against accidents as much as posible. That's why we have to pay the insurance companies so much money and we and they hope we need never claim.
There are rules and regulations businesses have to follow, if not, what would protect anyone from intentional neglect of equipment or goods because it's too expensive to maintain quality.
I understand your frustration on the frivolous lawsuits filed and making some rich when they are guilty of causing said incident. However, I did not see that the widow had any intention of suing as, she readily admitted her Husband went in of his own accord.
Not everyone that trys something to help in an emergency situation that they are untrained for is an idiot.

man are you people bleeding hearts or what. sounds like some peta nut job that had to save the dog, As far i know dogs can swim pretty good at least better than a man that cant.
