Question:
I just picked up a computer for fun to back up my system at FRYS. 800MHZ with Linux already on board.
Can that operating system handle most windows programs and devices?
Could I run Office 2000 and add my cd-rw hardware and run it's software? In general.

You mean you want to install windows on it and run those things, or you want to know if those windows programs will run under the Linux you got pre-installed?

To do this, you are going to need the CrossOver plugin found here.

There is a semi-proprietary product based on WINE called CrossOver Office that lets you run Microsoft Office.

Otherwise, there is a limited set of Windows applications that will run under WINE. You can check out the status for many applications here.

Linux, using WINE, is not really a satisfactory platform for running Windows applications, though. If you do it occasionallly, you might find it tolerable, but the best programs to run on Linux are Linux programs.
