Sarsour was arrested at Newark International Airport in Newark, NJ, upon a federal criminal complaint issued in the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The complaint alleges that Sarsour structured $25,000 in financial transactions on October 22, 1998, the day he departed for Israel, to avoid federal reporting requirements requiring that cash transactions in excess of $10,000 be reported. Sarsour was deported to the U.S. upon his recent release from prison in Israel where he had been in custody since his arrest when he arrived Tel Aviv from Milwaukee on October 23, 1998. Israeli court documents show that he was later charged with aiding HAMAS and later pled guilty to those charges. Deportation proceedings began when he completed his term of imprisonment.
