Ramp Worker Objected To Takeoff

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 9 — The commuter jet that crashed Wednesday, killing all 21 people on board, was loaded so heavily that a ramp worker refused to sign paperwork allowing it to take off, investigators told NBC News on Thursday. The plane was allowed to take off only after a supervisor signed the documents instead, even though the plane was loaded within 100 pounds of its maximum permissible weight and a key guidance mechanism had undergone extensive repairs only two days previously.

From the article and tonights NBC Nightly News:

Goglia said investigators were eager to talk with the crew that performed the repairs Monday in West Virginia.

If the plane “came out of the shop visit and it wasn’t balanced properly,” he said, “... it could be all over the sky.”

“If these particular individuals have done similar work on other airplanes, we want those airplanes looked at immediately,” he said. “We need to know which procedures were followed.”

No doubt! The folks here who gave that mechanic "the business" (as Wally Cleaver would say) for that little activity may want to reconsider their viewpoint.

Yea, I remember that thread the other day when lots of freepers were all over this worker for stopping a 737 from taking off...

I'm going to see if I can find any of the names and ping them.

Most competent Pilots LISTEN TO the "Ground Crew." "Something's NOT RIGHT, here..." Doc

With the large pitch-up it either was loaded very tail heavy or the elevator trim was not right.

There is a report that the elevator trim was just repaired and not recalibrated. If so there is no telling how it was really set.

If the trim was ok, it was load tail heavy. Something cused the steep pitch-up.

Yet another disaster that could've been averted if someone listend to the low man on the totem pole. It has happened before, and still happens today. When will people learn to trust someone when they say it is unsafe.
The ramp worker's supervisor should be charged with 21 counts of murder for what he did.

This makes me sick and mad as hell. These process failures are the cause of most accidents, even when the key part of the process had failed years earlier.

We all go through the humiliating process of being treated like terrorist suspects at the gate, terminal, check-in, and in the waiting area, and the airline chuckleheads can't figure out why they are losing money when people don't want to fly.

The airlines are losing money due to stupidly designed and inherently flawed processes, and then they are so shocked and sorry when a terrible accident happens.

From reading the article, it appears that pilot error was not the issue; but pilot stupidity certainly was. If I was a pilot and a ground crewman wouldn't sign-off on a takeoff; I'm not flying!

apparently the ramp worker knew how the airplane should look and it didn't look right.

It may have been that the nose strut was too far extended. (didn't have the normal weight on it.)

If something didn't look right on a plane I was flying on, I'd kinda like someone that is competent to make sure it was safe.

Ground crewman to supervisor: "See, I told you so!"

Supervisor: "Yes, you did. And BTW, you're FIRED!"

As I said on the other thread - the guy who threw the chock was an idiot. Not only did I say that, I gave alternative actions that he could have taken. Go look.

And guess what? This guy could have done the same thing.
