we just get the manufacturers from Russia to help us develop a counteraction to these "jammers".

No need. Jammers are like a flashlight in a dark room.

You can pick up everything I just published by purchasing a book at the local technical book store or doing some searches on the web. Anyone building a jammer would need additional information and some precision components to get the job done. GPS birds have been up for many years. Technical books covering their operation have been up nearly as long.

The net already provides assistance to our enemies. There are sites that tell you exactly when specific satellites will be overhead to perform surveillance. The Indians and Pakistanis took advantage of that information to move equipment prior to their underground nuke test. Our intel claimed to be surprised. We often claim "surprise" to avoid exposing just exactly what we can see.

screw the collateral damage!

Well, if you aren't worried about collateral damage, then this is the cheap way to go.

And with these babies, you do get points for being close, just like in horseshoes.

This Fox story is almost as big as the bungalow fire in a seedy neighborhood and the strip mall fire they've covered recently as "Breaking News". Sheesh.

The jammers won't work following an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) air burst.

They are spread spectrum signals.

Spread spectrum - called Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) in cell phones. Qualcomm invented it, and still has the controlling patents on it. It is generally a low powered signal that looks like static to a reciever without the key. The low power is why a 4 watt signal can jam so far.

Iraq may have purchased GPS jammers from Russians

And a high power microwave weapon will knock out the jammer.

JDAMs are very expensive and very limited in numbers.

Actually they are about as cheap as precision guided bomb gets, although laser guided ones are also pretty cheap. As far as being limited in numbers, I've read more than once that Boeing has greatly ramped up production starting shortly after 9-11. The numbers aren't so limited as they were when the sinkmeister left office, even though we used up a potfull in Afghanistan since then. From a May 8th article :

Fewer than 30 workers are needed to produce about 70 kits a day that turn dumb bombs into very smart ones, kits that will be needed by the thousands if the nation goes to war against Iraq. With supplies greatly diminished from the war on terrorism in Afghanistan, production eventually could reach 150 kits a day. But even at that rate, only a handful more workers would be needed.

And this from a 15 July article:

About 9,000 new JDAMs have been built this year, compared with about 10,000 total by the end of last year. Analysts have estimated that more than half of the first 10,000 JDAMs were used in Afghanistan and even more would be needed for an attack on Iraq.

So they built 9,000 from January to July, and have ramped up production rates since then, or started doing so shortly before then. I suspect we've got plenty of them, at least for Iraq. N. Korea and Iran will have to wait their turn as the test ground for the latest upgrades and varients. :)

Neither will anything else electronic in the area. ( a fairly large area) Not that I am opposed to it if we need it, but is there any policy on our use of EMP?

"Wouldn't be surprised if jamming turns out to be a little more difficult than the Iraquis think."

Doubt it... Gps uses 1227 MHz. Any strong dirty signal close to that freq would jam it.

Sure, if you use really big antennas!

The text accompanying the pictures seems to indicate that those longer jamming ranges are with directional antennas, and probably not the little job shown on the top of the unit.
