I knew it! When taxes on cigarettes went through the roof, and smokers went to the Net, the Reservations and Rolling Their Own, and the states weren't realizing that revenue any longer, they turn the propaganda into spin that people are quitting. What a Big Fat Laugh!
And this is also just a promoter for Big Pharm!
The reason the Government is working to get us all to quit smoking, is so Big Pharm can get our money for quit smoking aides!

Yup, I just placed a double order with Stuff Your Own today.
Funny, my wife is a RN and first found out about this from one of her patients. She thought it would cut down on my smoking, but soon realized how much money we were saving.
She is amazing and can crank out a full 200 cig carton in only 30 minutes! While watching TV, she likes to keep her hands busy, so making cigs is actually enjoyable to her.
The savings in taxes over the last 3 years is absolutely astounding.

More than ever, a significant number of Americans resolved to ring in a smoke-free New Year when the clock struck midnight on December 31st. How do they know?

The savings in taxes over the last 3 years is absolutely astounding. When Maine raised the taxes in the spring of 2002, putting our cartons at $45-$50 a carton, I said THAT'S IT! Through my friends in here, I found out about rolling our own.
We went right down to our local Smoke Shop, and stocked up. It's been 19 months of rolling our own. We get a beautiful carton for UNDER $8.00! The savings for Christmas has wonderful and not paying into the state coffers anymore just tickles me to death! They killed the goose that laid the golden egg, and we refuse to be singled out for money just because we smoke a legal commodity!

Good grief - this is nothing more than paid advertising by GlaxoSmithKline . The wrote a press release and had it issued through something like PRNewsire.
I am thoroughly sick and tired of these antis using paid propaganda by masking it as news.

The wrote a press release and had it issued through something like PRNewsire. Yep! They write their own propaganda and spin! And the general public believes it. And that statement about how many people made resolutions to quit smoking, and how quitting cold turkey is almost impossible. What a bunch of garbage!

In addition to cigarette tax hikes, the trend among governmental officials and lawmakers to implement public smoking bans in many cities and states further provide societal support for smokers to quit.
And don't forget how much support smokers get from harassment, ridicule and demonization. Can't you just feel all that love and support? I'm truly overwhelmed with gratitude. :-)

I quit about 4 years ago when they raised the taxes then. What are these idiots going to do when all of this tax revenue dries up. Also, more people have better long term success in quitting using the cold turkey method than with the patches, gum, and other things the pharmacuticle companys have out.

When I first saw your ping with the "Stuff your own" graph, it reminded me of something on an "An all in the Family" episode. Lionel, the son of Archie's neighbor George Jefferson, was at the Bunker's house. He was discussing how they arranged their bathroom medicine cabinet, suggesting that the Bunker's could do the same. He said something like they "shove this here and that there" and so forth. Then he said "So, then, you can SHOVE yours!" He left and went home. Archie said to "Meathead" ("Michael" - Rob Reiner), "You know, a fella could take that more than one way." Michael looked at Archie and said "Yeah, but if I know Lionel, he only meant it one way."...
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming....

And don't forget how much support smokers get from harassment, ridicule and demonization. Tell me about it.
I've had an on-going problem with with what basically amounts to drug dealers across the street from me. I have had all kinds of harrassment heaped upon me by these "people" because of my complaints to them about their loud music and my calling the cops.
the one person who is the major problem, and doesn't even live here, is an anti -- or at least comes across that way because of comments he has directed towards me. I can not walk out of my house to put out the trash or get in the car if he and his cronies are around without some smart aleck remark being made.
The funny thing is, it's the anti-smoker comments as opposed to the racial slurs that stick out most in my mind.

heh ... I still pay 17.99 a carton here in Texas and Nobles taste just like a Marlboro Light.

Okay, I'll admit I'm math-challenged so maybe someone can help me out here.
IF every 10% increase in price reduces cigarette use by 2% (that's a considerable difference in what the antis usually claim which is either 7% or 10%), why is the number of smokers virtually the same as it was a decade ago? Not long ago I tracked down the average cost of cigarettes nationwide in 1991 ($1.24) and discovered that the price has increased 322% since then. Does anyone actually believe smoking has decreased 64% since 1991? If so, I've got this bridge for sale...
