My daughter felt she had to temporarily join the NEA while she was student teaching because a membership provided some kind of lawsuit insurance in case a student falsely charged her with improprieties. Her college required this insurance.
Tort reform would be helpful for this reason, too. (Now that she is teaching, she dropped her membership.)
