NFL: Giants would have been flagged if they spiked it

NEW YORK -- Giants holder Matt Allen could not have spiked the botched snap on the final play of New York's loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
It's against the rules.
Mike Pereira, the NFL supervisor of officials, confirmed Monday that Allen would not have been allowed to immediately spike the ball because it was a long snap. The only time a player can spike the ball is when he takes the snap from under the center.
With six seconds left Sunday and the Giants trailing 39-38, Matt Bryant lined up to try a potential game-winning 41-yard field goal. The snap from newly signed Trey Junkin was in the dirt. Allen fumbled the ball, then made a desperation pass downfield to what turned out to be an ineligible receiver, guard Rich Seubert.
Fox commentator Cris Collinsworth said at the time that since it was third down, Allen could have spiked the ball, giving the Giants another chance at a kick. Afterward, on the Fox postgame show, other commentators agreed.
Pereira said the only other option would have been to throw to an eligible receiver.

Then Doleman went on to play for a decade too.
As a Bears fan I have great regard for Stockey. Watching him knock the hell out of that guy yesterday after catching the ball made me think of Da Coach and John Mackey. TE is another position at which the Bears are cursed. We can't get one to stay healthy for love nor money. This yr we had three go down and a rookie played the last four games and did look good.

All for not, because this is the year of the Raiders. They got robbed last year, and this year they're here to make things right. This year the Raiders will suffer a New York mugging. Should be one of the best games of the year.

If they could not get to Garcia, they would not get Vick! Good Point!!

Enjoy it now, because it all ends for you next week in Tampa. Amen!

But it certainly was an entertaining game, and it had the wackiest last minute I've seen in a long time.
It wasn't entertaining to me...
Man, these grapes are getting sour!

I like Brown too and expect him to be very good. If we get one of the two tackles back healthy then I think we will be much better. This yr it was tackle by committee.

McKinnon was a far better receiver than
Waddle. Waddle was not a game breaker. McKinnon was and a great punt and kickoff returner.

Here's a true story for you. During the game yesterday, when the Giants were up at halftime, I pointed out to someone that Shockey could never play for Bill Parcells because he drops too many easy balls. Talk about irony, huh?

I agree it'll be a great game, but come on, NYJ are not going to get past the Raiders. Thats just wishful thinking.

I sat there....just stunned for the last 10 minutes of the game.
But as I licked my wounds, I started thinking about how I felt before the season. I didn't expect much and much like 97 was pleasantly suprised at how things worked out. And of course like 97 the end was as bitter a pill as a fan should be forced to swallow.
Take heart in what happened to the Vikings the next time they saw them in the playoffs.

I'm so disgusted that I'm actually going to root for the Jets. Amen! And that is a first for me!
I'm sorry (and I'm not piling on here) but I think this loss goes entirely on Fassel's shoulders. He consistently squanders leads by going conservative. They Giants recievers were shredding the niners all day, and then the Giants O went home.
You have a point. The Jets did not let up on the Colts, which is what you have to do now with the 2pt conversion rule which can turn a game around very quickly
If there was anyone better out there that was available, I'd can Fassel. He can't win the big one.
In fairness to Fassel, you cannot win without a kicking game.
Had the kicker made that first field goal, the Giants would be on the way to Tampa.

The Dent who was the best pass rusher of his day and the most valuable player in Super Bowl XX. Though he had bad teeth when he arrived at the Bears he was no biter.

You a Dallas cry-boy fan by any chance? He sounds more like a Raider's fan.

Thank you for being a gracious winner but right now I just want to pout. I promise to be more mature in this discussion in 6 months. ;-)
