The ones out here frequently were. When I was a kid my mom and step-dad chain smoked. I attended some AA meetings with them that were pretty amazing. I to this day remember a small 15 by 15 foot room filled with cigarette smoke. About 40 inches off the floor was a 4 inch layer of smoke from wall to wall. I've never seen anything like it since.

You never went to a wrestling match in the 70's.

It's becoming more obvious every day that my theory of nannyism is correct. People who had happy childhoods are seldom, if ever, anti-smoker nannies, whether or not they smoke. On the other hand, those who had bad childhoods are far more inclined to try to "fix" others against their will and become unpleasant scolds when it doesn't work. They exhibit a basic unhappiness that seems to permeate everything they do. Sad, really.

And I used to go with my grandma when she went to play bingo and it was the same way. Nearly everybody smoked. My grandma didn't and she would occasionally make a passing remark about it. I didn't care for it either but if it bothered me I went and played in the hallway. Didn't hurt me any. The point is that a lot of changes have been made and things are a lot different now than they were 30-40 years ago and few places are THAT bad. Many concessions have been made to accommodate nonsmokers, but it just isn't enough to satisfy some people.
