Paintballers have stand off with Police SWAT in Coconut Creek, FL.
Florida Shooters Network ^ | 1/5/03 | Ryan

Posted on 01/05/2003 1:07:14 PM PST by Sledge

The following was posted on the Florida Shooters Network BBS this afternoon. What Ryan is hoping for is to inundate the e-mail of Mayor of Coconut Creek with e-mails expressing outrage over this blatant abuse of police power, ignoring private rights, and generally being jerks in dealing with a bunch of kids playing paintball on a vacant wooded lot.

Thank you for your help. I know that no one can "inundate" like Freepers.

--------------------------------------------------------

For those you who don't know. I operate out of Broward County operating a licensed corporation selling Paintball Supplies and Law-Enforcement Gear to the general public and private industries.

Well today wasn't a good day for my customers who play paintball inside the city of Coconut Creek.

Yesturday I was told by Officer Chris Colehorst to leave the property I had permission by the property owner to use to have kids and adults play on.

Officer Colehorst had a very bad attitude and wouldn't listen to any reasoning what so ever from us or the property owner...

Mind you my customers have been playing on this property for weeks since everyone was thrown off the old field up the street.

I called the property owner out on Saturday. He came and explained the situation to the officers. You think the officers would listen huh. NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOO...

So today all the paintballers went back to the old field except I where the same single officer who confronted us yesturday told them to leave.

Well try telling 40 pissed off already people that. MIAMI RIOTS MEAN ANYTHING HERE.

SO guess what... They told the one same officer to go screw off.

Guess who shows up at 11:30 am this morning.... after they told officer Colehorst to screw off.

WOW Coconut Creek SWAT shows up to enforce paintballers............ WOW something is strange here fellas... In this country of ours.... You dangerous evil paintballers must die from MP5 SMG fire.

I couldn't believe the phone calls I just got over the cell phone / NEXTEL direct connect....

Christ oh mighty for paintball. WTF guys...

I have a meeting with the Mayor of Coconut Creek Mayor Jim Walden Monday afternoon at 2:00 to discuss this situation. I have letters from parents and kids discussing there grief over the police stand off's over paintball. This stuff is just getting stupid by the year.

Coconut Creek SWAT to round up paintballers, WTF is going on...

I wasn't out there today but these kids have been playing out there in the old field since 1997. Now their's a problem with police after 5 years of playing.

I made a deal with a land owner up the street from the old field to clean up his property in exchange for the kids to use it as there new field. We did that three weeks ago.

Yesturday the NAZI Authorities threw us off the new field causing more problems. Tomorrow I need to speak with the thrid reich mayor and get his approval to the use the property we have permission to use for a field the kids can play on.

Contact Info is here for anyone who cares.

Coconut Creek Police Dept. 954-973-6700

Officer Cherry Judd

Officer Chris Corehorst

Seargent Waymire (Delta Unit Northern District)...

Oh officer Coreherst had the balls to call me this morning on my business mobile number and asked me on his personal cell phone if I was in the old field. CAN YOU SAY POLICE ENTRAPMENT. I own his ass now...

Thank god I have caller I.D. I have officer Coreherst personal cell number. The @#%$ cop with an attitude.

I'm sure to file a complaint Monday with the Mayor's office with other parents about this officer who seems to enjoy his job to much with the general public.

I was told this officer has been on the force for 7 months only...... Hmmmmm he is still on his probationary period... What a shame... This officer was really a dick to the property owner to the parents and I out in the new field. No reason to have that attitude towards parents or kids. He will be written up no doubt.

Funny how his attitude changed when I told him my attorney's number and the Mayor's Office number. Power is nothing with-out control.

The cops have no clue what they are doing. Right now no laws exist to enforce because there aren't any. There are no ordinances or laws broken. Nor has anyone been hurt. Everyone cleans up there own trash and keeps the areas clean.

You would think that when a property owner gives you permission to use his property the way it was intended to be used for you can use it. NOT ACCORDING TO THE THIRD REICH POLICE. When does the police have jurisdiction over an individuals property and how he or she operates on it. WTF

You get thrown off the old field a vacant field lot granted the kids did not have permission to use. OK no problem...

THE NEW FIELD........

I busted my ass on this land owners property cleaning it up for three weeks to have permission to use it so the kids can play on it and still be accosted by the cops. I can't figure this dilema out. You can't win, unless, unless you have NUCLEAR WEAPONS

I plan on doing a presentation in front of Mayor Hitler tomorrow. I also have letters from parents and individual players who are waiting for an answer from the top brass... Yeh like this matters.

The only thing political gestpos understand is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ of course. So I will see how this angle comes out. Catch my drift/

If I can't make this happen. I need a venture capitalist fast to build a legal tax paying field because these kids aren't gonna leave town any time soon.

I get over 200 customers a weekend buying merchandise from my shop. Huge gross revenue. I rent out equipment and service markers that need to be repaired.

The Police have just made it difficult for these kids...

Why can't the cops just be friends. Just like mike

I offered the cops to play but the Chief Adolph Hitler threatend the individual officers already from playing. Conduct of unbecomming of an officer crap.

I own my own business and have all the time on my side but very little patience dealing with a-holes

If you would like to assist in a minor role with this situation. Please call the City Hall of Coconut Creek 954-973-6770

Ask for Mayor Jim Walden

E-mail for him is at jwaldman@creekgov.net

SWAT TEAM -vs- Paintballers that is to funny but scary.

I can be reached at 954 - 575 - 5039 directly.

Good evening my fello freepers.

You probably already know about half the situation I'm dealing with in the town of Coconut Creek.

The situation between the paintballers who are just plan law abiding kids and adults has spun out of control in the city of Coconut Creek.

I do apologize for my grammer and mis-spellings from previous posts on the EZ board network.

If you can understand from a business owner's stand point I'm pretty upset with the on going crisis the kids and adults are going thru with the Coconut Creek Police Department. After trying my-self to remedy the situation between my customers and with Law-Enforcement officials. I have been finally blocked out from talking with C.C.L.E.O.'s

The Mayor of Coconut Creek Jim Waldman is my only choice.

Let me set the facts strait here first with you freepers. Please give feed back about how to approach this situation correctly with-out flames or ridiculous comments that serve no purpose.

Paintballers -vs- Coconut Creek SRT Enforcement Bureau.

The paintballers today returned to the old property they were bannished from playing on back in the first week of December. Parents called and complained to me that the kids were being chased off by the local police. What can you do Ryan to help the parents asked??? Well here we go "RANT ON"

Since I have relative close ties with a particular L.E.O. in Coconut Creek I asked them what can I do to correct the situation. Coconut Creek Police said find a land owner who will allow you with written permission to play on his property. OK no problem. I find out that my Doctor, Dr. Schmidt who is a local practionair owns 10 acres of property just 1/2 mile west of the old paintball field.

Excellent. The Doctor and I made an agreement that if I cleared out his lot of all the trash and debri we can have full use of his property on the weekends. The dispatch at the police department new about this but failed to notify the road patrol officers. "Great department communication"

A quick call to the Doctor while the police showed up two weeks ago solved this problem very fast. OK, then you think it's all over and OK then right. WRONG

Police change shift December 18th 2003. Oh great new officers to deal with.

After working my self to almost dire fatigue for the past three weeks with these nice kids to have a place to play. The top brass at Coconut Creek City Hall finally get a sniff on what was happening out here. Here is how everything sits today as I write this.

Wow, I notice how my english and grammer improves after ranting so long.

Here is where it stands................

I was granted permission to use private property three weeks ago from a local Doctor who owns the property along a strech of road way in the town of Coconut Creek.

Last year in the first week of December the kids and parents who purchase many paintball products from me where chased off of non posted private property. Just a vacant lot with no I.D. or realty property owner listed. The kids have been playing on this vacant property for the past 5 years since 1997.

December 2002 they are now chased off by local L.E.O.'s with no place to go. Guess who calls me for help. The parents and all the kids. Well being a nice guy that I am, I approached the Doctor I know that owns property up the street about this problem. Two light bulbs turn on and an agreement was made.

While assisting the kids with a new field I wanted to remedy the situation with the police department by contacting the Police Seargent on duty for the weekends on good faith.

Seargent Waymire is the DELTA unit in charge on the weekends. His response to me about the paintballers is if he doesn't get a call. I won't bother them. Apparently it has struck a cord and has bothered the upper brass in Coconut Creek Police Department this week.

I was challenged Saturday morning by Officer Chris Corehurst and Officer Cherry Judd on property I had full written permission to be on. I had the property owner ( the doctor come out and try to remedy the situation with the officers on scene. Well to say the least, no dice. Great, three weeks of hard work with these good kids to promise a paintball field and now two officers just shut the whole operation down in 1 minute.

Apparently from what the officers were challenging was whether or not I had full authority to use the property for what I requested the doctor to use it for. We solved that question until the officers threw a curve ball at us stating the city ordinance about discharging paintball markers with-in city limits. Oh yes I asked. Did you read the rest of the city ordinance at the bottom of the paragraph officer. Enforcement of this ordinance is only allowed in cases of public nuisance or criminal mischief. Neither of which was happening out on the property we have permission to use.

OK you would think the officer knows what the deal is right.
He knows he can't enforce anything and I know I'm with-in my legal rights to play on the property with these kids.

This officer is now becoming irrate with me and calls the Seargent on his MOTOROLA RADIO. Seargent chooses to close everything down and refers me to city hall for questioning.

The Doctor now has this situation out of his hands. All the kids waiting to play patiently on Saturday all had to leave immediatly after just showing up to play on the new field.

So now officer Chris Corehurst knows I have it in for him. Just happens the police decided to show up first thing Saturday morning to harass us with no complaints from anyone in the city. They just knew we were out there because I told the same Seargent two days ago I would be out there with kids playing on the doctors property.

After all the disappointed kids left the property you know where I headed. Directly to the police department to pay a visit to my friendly honest neighborhood police Seargent who wasn't there. I called the department many times Saturday to reach the seargent until I accidently was sent to the dispatch operator.

The operator at dispatch explained the whole situation and it begins with the Chief of Police George Raggio Jr. He does not want us any where in his city playing paintball.

The plot thickens freepers.

The chief of police has ordered all officers to chase all paintballers off all property reguardless if we have permission or not. Now I have the whole story out in front.

Sunday rolls around and I'm at home in bed at 9:30am sleeping. My cell phone rings. I answer the phone. Guess who's calling me. Huh hello Ryan Officer Chris Corehurst asking for Ryan at JRT Outdoor-Outfitters which by the way is my corporation name. Chris asked me if I'm out in the old paintball field. I said no. I'm at home right now. Then ruddly hangs up the phone like he is on a mission. Hmmmmm I said. This guy has my business number which is OK. But calling me at 9:30am Sunday to ask if I'm in the old paintball field. I knew something was up. Sure thing.

All the kids and adults who expected to play on the new paintball field Saturday morning showed up Sunday morning at the old field which hasn't been played on in well over a month due to the police harassment.

I received several phone calls from various people asking me if the old field re-opened. I said not that I know of guys. Then 15 minutes go by at about 9:45am a kid called me on his cell phone to tell me the same officer who challenged me Saturday morning was approaching the field in his squad car blocking off the field entrance so cars couldn't go thru screaming and arguing with folks out in the old paintball field. I said to my-self oh dam this going to be a long day. Apparently I was not in the old paintball field Sunday morning. I don't know exactly what transpired Sunday morning. I wasn't there. Apparently a few paintballers just had it with this particular officers attitude towards them so they in return challenge the officer.

You can fill in the rest from there.

At 10:35 am on my NEXTEL phone I heard someone key into my direct connect service to say there here, there here, there here... I had no idea what the hell was going and heard people running in the background on the radio. One person I spoke with on the phone said the ERT or SRT riot team showed up in full gear ready to restore order after officer Chris Corehurst was challenged by people in the old field. I can't say for sure what exactly happend out there because I wasn't there to see it.

I tried to get in touch with the Seargent on Duty ASAP to find out what was going on. But I couldn't. Dispatch wouldn't put me thru to him. What a dam mess this has become.

So this is where it stands. These paintballers don't have a place to play. These guys don't all have cars and can't travel 2 hours away to play paintball on a licensed regulated field.

Freepers what can I do as a business owner with limited funding to remedy this nightmare these kids are in ???

Welcome to FR, Ryan. As you can see, there are some, should I say, disagreements, but on the whole Freepers are a good bunch.

Keep us updated.

No legal advice from me here but I think some of these kids parents need to stand up with you on this. Sounds like some of them may have been at the field with the kids on Sunday. If so try to find one that can give you a clear story about that and will stand up with you to challenge the police' legal standing. I hate to say it but it sounds like time to lawyer up. The more you can get to stand together the more of you to split his/her fee. Good luck. Keep us posted!

The funny thing is: lot of these "cops" are totally terrified of messing with the the real gang-bangers. Not without 50 backups!

Okay - now it makes sense...While you might have a financial interest in the eventual outcome of the situation and it appears the players and parents are looking to you to lead, this situation should be dealt with by the parents.

"I don't believe cops in general, having seen them lie in court.
And yes, I believe 40 private citizens, kids and parents over a cop. Any day of the week."

I agree completely. With the attitudes I've seen displayed from some cops over the past 20 years or so and the growth industry in Special Weapons and Tactics units, I believe this is the right attitude to have toward LEOs, at least until they clean up their own act.

Little things count if a cop wants respect, like respect for the law themselves. During my small ten mile commute to work, at least twice a week, I am passed by a Connecticut State trooper while I am going 5 to 10 miles over the speed limit and he's travelling another 10 to 15 mph faster than I am. I've also seen a cop turn his lights on, just to drive through a red light and pull into the police station and casually walk to the front door (obviously no emergency). These little bends on the traffic regulations seem minor, but what they tell me is that these LEOs do not respect the law and see laws as no more than a tool to use against citizens should the need arise. Cops with this attitude deserve no respect at all. They've made themselves into nothing more than one more gang, albeit a gang with city hall backing them up.

Frankly, its not surprising that the cops would get their panties in a twist over a game that teaches how to take cover and return fire.

Cops routinely lie, even in small matters. I tape ALL interactions with cops. I've had two tickets thrown out because I had cops on tape lying. Even the cynical clerk magistrates thought that was too shameful. But the odds are those cops did it whenever it was convenient for them, and they suffered no consequences but a bruised ego. That means thousands of bad tickets per year from each of those cops.

That was before the Internet was so widespread and digital camera were cheap and concealable. Next time a cop does that he'll be famous.

I hope someone in the tort bar decides to try to recover those fines collected in bad faith. Giving a state a billion dollar spanking would get their attention.

If I remember, private tapes are not admissable because they can be edited.

Rules of evidence before a clerk magistrate are not very formal. Neither side has counsel unless it is a serious charge like drunk driving. The clerk magistrate can hear and see pretty much anything he wants. The cop's recourse would be to ask for a trial. Very unlikely.

Maybe not as accurate as those fancy pink-colored paintballs but they sure did pack a wallop even with high-trajectory indirect fire. Ahhh......the good old days.

to say nothing of the pig-weed and sunflower dirt-clod projectiles that are "fin" stabilized...

OUCH!

Inundating a police department with e-mail will be looked upon as extremely childish behavior and will do more damage to his cause than good.

You're right. It would be better if our kids were out stealing to support a drug habit and knocking-up every available skirt. That way Social Services could justify themselves.

Kids having good, clean fun. What a tragedy.
