Saddam announces Exploratory Committee 10:18 AM PST by Dallas WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein will say on Monday he will run for the White House in 2004, promising to lead the country in a new direction and blasting President Bush for failing to secure the nation's economic or domestic security. "On nearly every issue of importance to the country -- national security, the economy, health care, education, energy policy -- President Bush is leading the country either down the wrong path or not leading at all," said Saddam, who will officially step aside as the House's top Democrat when Congress convenes next week. Saddam, of Iraq, who had made no secret of his presidential intentions, said he would officially form a campaign committee on Monday that would allow him to raise funds for his race. It will be the second presidential bid for Saddam, who brings an established political network and fund-raising ability to the race but failed to lead Democrats back to House control in four consecutive elections since 1994. He also must convince Democratic activists yearning for a fresh voice that he is the candidate most capable of doing battle with Bush in 2004. "I look forward to challenging President Bush and offering a distinctive choice and different direction for our domestic, economic and national security policies," Saddam said in a statement. Saddam joins a rapidly growing Democratic field that includes North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and civil rights activist Al Sharpton. Others are expected to follow soon.
