Yes that does happen, rarely, but if a perfectly good descriptive word is hijacked to describe a perverted, reprehensible group of outlandish homos, then it seems to go past "the meaning and application" you describe.

The word "gay" was definitely hijacked, and it could never have happened if the press would have not picked up the word and gave it a filthy meaning. Gay no longer means happy.
