Washington-AP -- In step with President Bush's faith-based initiative, the federal government has sent money from its child support programs to religious and nonprofit groups so they can promote marriage.Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson has announced more than two (m) million dollars in grants to 12 states and a variety of religious, nonprofit and tribal organizations.
The Marriage Coalition in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, received almost 200-thousand dollars to test a curriculum for poor single parents that emphasizes the value of marriage and child support.
In Allentown, Pennsylvania, a group called Community Services for Children got 177-thousand dollars to work with church groups in providing marriage education and other services to unwed couples.
Some Democrats in Congress object to the prospect that church groups will use the tax dollars to proselytize. Bush says no government money will be used "to directly support inherently religious activities.
Then what's the point, George with your "faith based initiave" ?
The problem is that Bushs' faith based initiative goes beyond that. What I mean is as a taxpayer I get to foot the bill for religions I am at complete odds with. This policy cannot discriminate against who comes for money or dictate their agenda. For example, I'm not interested in funding ANYTHING for Muslims. Zilcho. Yet under the faith based initiative, they are just as eligible as any other "faith".
Must I remind you that the role of government is not to get involved with religion. Certainly funding it does just that.
